if you can't see the DVD writer on the "My Computer" please check the SATA/IDE cable if it is plugged correctly.. or else it's broken or check for the warranty.
make sure that the cd-rw/dvd-rom burner is getting enough consistent power test all leads that are attached to the cd-rw/dvd-rom burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might bebad/faulty hope this helps
try a firmware update and then if it still dosnt see the disc make sure if its old to check inside to see if the laser maybe out of set. and or a bad diode laser.
If you are convinced that the laser burned out, the most you can do is to buy a new drive. It's possible to buy a new diode and replace it, but it's highly not recommended as it might not be compatible and can be very dangerous.
Go to Dell's support site and to their driver page. Put your model number in the box for a search and a page with your drivers will appear, download the drivers for your model and do a re-install of them. download them to a temp folder and when they are downloaded, double click and they will self install, put off rebooting until you install them all.
Hi. This is common. It usually means the laser diode is too weak to burn the layer on the disc, or the lens has lost it's clarity. This means the optical pickup assembly requires replacement. Probably time to replace the drive.
