How to remove virus

First of, your question is a tricky question.
There are many anti-virus programmes on the net. Free and pay. Things to keep in mind is virus come first than the anti-virus comes out. Virus programmers are always looking for weakness in a system and they write a virus for many purposes. Other annoying facts is even if the virus was killed or out of the programme, it is very hard to fix anything they have damaged. So, you have to keep in mind even though you successfully killed a virus you still need to fix damage it has cause. That is why IT people always recommend to back up your data, format your HDD and reinstall windows and the programmes you are using.
Said that, now let's get to the virus problem.
Free anti-viruses:
1. AVG
2. AVAST
3. Avira
4. McFee

Others
1. Norton
2. Microsoft - ForeFront, Security Essential (comes with Windows license version.)
3. Kespersky

The above anti-viruses are good in their own ways. As said before you need fixes, patches to fix the damage. They also have fixes once the virus has been identified. Check out their websites by google searching.

Good luck mate.

The best and cheapest solution (used this loads of times) is to download this programme

select personal use only

Download to a usb stick and reboot your computer to safe mode (f8), run the programme from usb
then after it has found and killed the virus, do a custom scan ( c/...) to make sure the hard drive is clean

Then delete all your recovery backups, ( turn off sys restore) as the virus may be still resident there ( you can always re-enable system resore afterwards)

I think my computer has no virus protection and everytime I try and download some it says I need to download a newer version of windows but also I have to appearently download a newer version of microsoft...

Which version of Windows are you using:
* Windows 95
* Windows 98
* Windows NT
* Windows 2000

Note that as of 13-July-2010, *NONE* of the above Operating Systems are supported by Microsoft. So, some anti-virus programs will *NOT* run on those "retired" Operating Systems;
you need to install a newer version of Microsoft Windows.

From another computer with Internet access,
download the FREE anti-virus software:

http://www.Microsoft.com/security_essentials

and copy the downloaded file to a USB memory-stick.

Move the memory-stick to your computer, and connect it.
Run the downloaded program on that memory stick, to install the anti-virus software onto your computer.

Antivirus

If you have already downloaded the programme you need, you must turn off system restore, then start your pc in safe mode, install the anti virus update the anti virus then run the check. Using safe mode will stop the trojan or virus from running and making it easier to find by the anti virus programme.

VIRUS INFECTION , YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED

this is what sounds like a trojan or for of spyware, probably disguised as a screen saver. If you have no anti virus installed download this programme for free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free If you have no anti spyware programme download this for free. http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 on the laptop press Ctrl, Alt & delete or right click on task bar to get to the task manager and on the processes tab look for the scrensaver.exe or similair that is running, click on it and press end process. this should allow you to work with windows Install the programmes, then go to system restore tab in my computer>right click>properties>system restore tab and click 'turn off system restore'(this will stop any virus or spyware backups reinstalling). Run both the programmes and remove any spyware or virus. If it still appears you may have to uninstall it safe mode, which is press F8 key on start up and select 'start windows in safe mode' and run the antivirus and spyware programmes again.
