I have a brigg and statton mower 550 series its brand new i used it twice and now when i prime it it will start but run for a few seconds then stop what causes this can i fix it?

Sounds like you have debris/trash in your carburetor or maybe water in the fuel tank.
Check and clean your fuel tank.
Clean your carburetor and that should solve your problem

needs to have carb cleaned out. most likely the main jet in the carb is plugged. symptoms include only running on choke and dies when choke is turned to run. or if you only have a primer bulb, it will only run for only a few seconds every time it is primed. if you are qualified to work on the carb, dont forget to start with fresh gas and possibly new fuel line and filter. R
Water will cause problems like this. Ethanol in the fuel causes the water in the air to pool in the tank. 2011 engines will be equipped with a better orfice that will not corrode from the water. You might contact a local dealer like www.arcolawn.com and get the updated tube. good luck
i have a brand new craftsman briggs &stratton silver engine series 5.50 158cc it will start but will not run unless i keep pushing the prime button to give it gas once i stop so does the engine
Hmmmm,,and the plot thickens. Without seeing the unit, i would have to think that when you pull the engine control cable bar, its not releasing the brake that sits against the flywheel. These cables do stretch. Pull the engine cover and you will see the brake against the flywheel. Pull the engine control handle and watch and see if brake is releasing. If its not, replace the cable.
That would be my bet. I hope this is of some help.
Maybe the engine is running with the fuel from the primer bulb (about few seconds), the carburator is not working and need to be removed checked and cleaned, the most common fail is a jet clogged.
