My Vizio 37inch is 4 years old and it just started having a problem with the picture. The screen has a strobe or flickering effect after being on for about 20 minutes.

A Vizio TV will flicker if there is a broken backlight, loose or faulty video cable or port, poor signal strength or incompatible display settings. Reseat all cable and connections to the television from your devices. Physically remove the cables from both the television and the device and reconnect them. If you have any of these options available please turn all of them off to see if this resolves the display flickering. lickering and shorted leds causing dark spots are both symptoms of bad leds. You can try turning down the backlight level and see if the flickering stops. The ultimate solution may be to replace the LED strips.
Unfortunately, it not a board problem. The LEDs in the TV are bad. These are nearly impossible for repair. As a servicer for television I have repaired many of these. As they were are under warranty, replacement panel is needed for this repair. To purchase a pane,l is not cost effective. What is the panel ? In the old TV, you know what a picture tube is. Sounds like you have an LCD tv with backlight problems. Check power board for domed capacitors and replace them. next check connections on the inverter boards. they are on the sides or just one side. Becareful there is high voltage output from these boards. If the cable from inverter board is not good to the screen you can get a strobing. the inverter boards may need replaced. or cales to screen may be bad. The panel also could be bad.
I am having the same issue, I think the best solution is to replace the inverter slave and master boards. These are the circuits that controls the backlight and causes the flickering when they are malfuctioning.
