Both freezer and fridge just stopped cooling. The lights come on when the doors are open and it sounds as if it's trying to run, but no cooling.

The problem can be temperature not set properly or any of fridge or freezer door not closed properly and cool air is getting leaked out. This are basic possibilities which first needs to be checked. But if this possibilities are checked ok and still the problem is same, then its weak compressor issue. Unplug refrigerator pull away from wall. Remove cover over compressor and feel top of compressor to see if overheating or trying to start. If too hot to hold hand on top leave unplugged until we locate the problem. This could be capacitor, start relay, overload, motherboard. This can Be fixed but we need to eliminate cause before replacing any parts. Sea Breeze

Good day,
Step one. Remove the light guard in the fresh food section and where the main thermostat is located is a slot where you can insert a screwdriver. This is where the timer is. With the machine running, turn the shaft clockwise until the machine shuts off. Wait 35 minutes. If the machine comes back on, the timer is o.k. if not replace it.

If the timer is o.k move over to the freezer side. With the machine having been on for at least 6 hours remove the rear panel.
Inspect the cooling coil closely. It should have a frost coating from bottom to top. If the top coils are clean, you have developed a freon leak and have a serious problem.

If the coil is active top to bottom, then you will need to replace the dual glass defrost heaters and the defrost thermostat. One or the other may still be good at the time but it isn't worth the hassle to go into the system twice.

Installing them is tedious but doable. Take your time and keep track of how it comes apart. It's a monkey see monkey do job.
Careful on pulling the new wires.

P.S.The top coils wil not be as heavily frosted as the bottom ones but must have an active coating of frost on them.

GE Profile - Fridge Doesn't Cool But Freezer Works Fine

Had a similar problem with my Kenwood Fridge Freezer
If you're mechanically minded you could check if there's an opening and motorised flap (usually behind a cover) at the top of the fridge - Cold air from the freezer enters the fridge through this flap) The Sound you heard could have been the motor trying to open / close this flap. This flap can become frozen in the closed position - so cold air is unable to enter the fridge compartment) My fix was to thaw it with a hairdryer and reassemble. Another fix would be to empty the freezer and open the doors - it might take more than 24 hours but once completely defrosted if the flap is the issue it will have defrosted. Once plugged in again the door will open and cold air will start to flow into the fridge compartment. I had a quote for €195 for a call out / repair
I fixed it myself in an hour - Hope it works for you ...
