With the radios shut off, plug them into the charger, then leave them for 3 hours or more. The batteries, if good, should be charged by then.

However, on other TalkAbout models the backlight will automatically illuminate when you press any of the buttons other than the PTT and the musical note, and then the light will remain on for 5 seconds before automatically turning off. I do not know if this is the same on the T8500.Best regards.
