Using non standard chargers is probably the problem. If the battery has suddenly become sogged since using this charger then it may have done more damage than you want to know about.
Was it the correct polarity +ve Tip? was it the right amperage?
Magellan are specific in recommending you only use their charger and with reason, its correctly made for it.

You can try the new battery angle, but get advice on the charger.
As a small note.. Car chargers do NOT fully recharge batteries in GPS. Use an AC or USB charger. The car charger is a maintenance power supply. Always fully charge the unit prior to use and do not plug to car power until engine has been started.
These are standard rules with all non hard wired GPS and phones, ( but not always in the manual, have to have service and new sales someway!)

Well you could take it in for a repair but you can buy a new one for $70 on amazon now, so it isn't worth fixing a broken screen. It would probley cost you more to have it fixed. Unless your kinda handy with tools you could always order the part from somewhere and try and fix it yourself. you really cant do anymore damage to it. It's how I learned out to fix things, just taking everything apart. My mother used to get mad at me though :-)

there is a reset button...you need to take a ballpoint pin and push the button in for a few seconds...it should power on

It is actually much cheaper to buy a new unit than to repair it.
It cost around $150 and above, depends on how crack it is and what model of magellan you're using.

It is good that the temperature was at about 55 because these units will not charge at certain temperatures. I believe the lower limit for charging is the freezing point (32 degrees).

What about the power socket in the vehicle? Does it always have power applied, even when the ignition is not turned on? I know some vehicles turn OFF the power to the lighter and power sockets when the car is turned off.

Have you tried your car charger in another vehicle? Or have you tried another adapter, such as a cell phone charger, in the same power socket in the car? I am just trying to find out if there is power coming from the socket that you have picked. Also, try this:
* Press and hold the POWER button for 10 seconds.
* In the event the unit does not power on, reset it. The reset button is located on the bottom of the unit.

it can be repaired, but the problem is that the cost to repair is more than the cost of a replacement GPS, a good Garmin or Tomtom goes for about $140.

This saves disposing of it in the trash and any of the internals never being used again but if you recycle it, That way you can do your part for the climate.

try replacing the battery

Try a new unit. If it works, yours is broken and needs to be replaced.

With Magellan? You want free updates? If Magellan doesn't offer them then you are out of luck. At least on the legal software end of things. That's all I'm saying about that

Ok well i just did an exhaustive search, and I couldn't find anyone who even sells replacement screens as such, but they are actually 2 things, the screen, and the Touch screen on top. They can be real tricky, and fiddly to do, but it is not too hard if your careful and have all the tools and "Bits". My recommendation, is to send it back to Magellan, and get a "Quote" for repair, that way you can see to repair or replace, depending on cost etc, these manufactures are pretty fair with pricing.
