You don't say where you are. I'm presuming that you're in the USA and have a map of Canada on your satnav. If so press WHERE TO and then ADDRESS. When you press address the country it's set to is shown at the top of the screen. At the bottom there's a bar which says CHANGE COUNTRY (if you have a second country on your map) Press CHANGE COUNTRY and type CANADA. You should then be able to set Canadian addresses.

Plug the device into a computer via usb and load software that came with it or get the drivers from garmin's website.

Have you tried resetting the 205W. There is a reset button on the bottom of some of the units if not power off the unit and then hold the power button for about 10 seconds till it starts, it should go through a start up and then reboot itself. See page 42 of manual. I will attach a link to the manual, click here.

On the main screen of the unit (after you have just turned it on, for instance), there should be a volume button on the bottom bar. Touch it to enter the volume control, where you can set the voice volume.

The lock should not drain the battery. If it does there must be a fault in the satnav.

The link provided by Garmin for the nuvi 255W returns the 205 / 205W manual instead. The main difference is the maps. The 205 offers built in maps of the U.S. only - while the 255 offers built in maps of U.S. & Canada.

In order to print the manual, you'll need to save the file and then use the free Adobe Reader program to open it. Use Abode Reader's internal Print function to properly format and print the manual to your printer. The Print command is visible under the "File" section or can be started by pressing Ctrl + P keys.

In case the Garmin Map came with lifetime updates or was bought 90 days ago - it's possible to download the map again to a PC / Mac for use with Mapsource or to upload it to a compatible Garmin GPS.

For this the Map license code printed on the SDCARD package box is required.

Downloading a Garmin Map is a large 3Gb download and requires a stable and fast internet connection - installing it onto a compatible Garmin GPS requires a least 5Gb of space on the boot drive. (On a PC the C-drive)

The main charge unit that holds all the energy and allows charge current to store this energy, could have had internal components come lose or no longer can store and hold it's charge due to over charging, overheating, to just use through out years.

The Nuvi should detect the maps on the SDCARD automatically. A notice appears on the screen to install the maps on your Nuvi. This will take a while to copy the maps from the SDCARD to your unit for installation. After this the maps should be able to function without the SDCARD present.

The Garmin Nuvi needs internal memory for map installation. If there's not much memory left the Map installation might fail. Remaining memory can be checked by connecting the Nuvi to a PC/MAC using an USB cable. It ill appear as an external USB drive. The properties of the USB drive shows remaining memory.

If remaining memory is under 5Gb it might not be enough for MAP install. In this case a master reset to the factory defaults clears memory. This will delete all user data so be sure to store your personal POI's in Mapsource.

A master reset starts by pressing the bottom left corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds while pressing the power button once. A question appears to clear all user data.

Garmin uses small Hex / Torque type screws to close the casing for the Nuvi and Dezl range.

A Hex / Torque tool set in different sizes can be found in cellphone repair shops or hardware stores.

Have you tried a touch screen calibration? Here is the procedure:
Turn off your Nuvi. Then hold the upper left corner of the screen firmly while turning it back on.Release the power key when the Garmin screen appears.

The only difference between doing a once off update and a lifetime update is that when you click on Get Update you get the option to select between a "Onetime" or a "Liftime" update. After the first time you download an update, on a lifetime update, each time you go to update it brings you straight to the download page when you click on "Get Update"

Note: Lifetime refers to the lifetime of your satnav not to your life.

To safe a copy of the manual to your computer click the second icon from the left on the Adobe Reader toolbar, the toolbar just above the text of the manual, and it will give you an option to save a copy. Give it a name you'll remember like Garmin 205 Manual.

You need a mini USB lead which should have come with the satnav. If it didn't you might have one for another appliance that connects to your computer like a digital camera, camcorder, external hard drive etc. Many of these and other appliances connect using mini USB leads. If you don't have one you can get them in any computer shop.

Sometimes this happens because the charger lead is not pushed fully into the back of the satnav even though it feels like it is. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.
