Try performing a soft reset on the unit.
Resetting Your nüvi
If your unit stops responding, turn off the unit, and then turn it back on. If this does not help, perform a reset using the reset button on the bottom of the unit.
Caution: Do not reset your nüvi with a ballpoint pen or other sharp object, which can damage your unit.
1. Disconnect the nüvi from external power.
2. Press the Reset button on the bottom of the nüvi.
3. Connect the nüvi to a power source.

A hard reset can also be done but will erase all the user data.
This is done by with the unit off and pressing and holding the bottom right hand corner of the screen while turning the unit on.

You could also try running the Garmin WebUpdater.
Download and Install WebUpdater.

go to where the code was set the device will work and you can remove the lock....

goo back to where the password was set the device will come on and you can remove the password

I am assuming that it is asking for pin code before it can be used. You need to enter the security code that was originally entered. The code prevents the unit from being used if it is stolen and the code can only be rest by calling Garmin and it may have to be sent in for repair. They will require proof of ownership. I will attach a link to Garmin support.

Have you tried a screen calibration? Turn off the unit then press and hold the upper left of the screen as you turn it on. A dot will show up on screen and then press the dot firmly as it moves around the screen. When it is done it will say screen calibration complete.
I also assume you tried a reset by pressing the reset button or on the newer 205's just hold the power button while turning it on for about 15 seconds until it reboots.

To update your garmin nuvi is free. All you need to do is to first downlad the webupdater on to a PC then you go to the webupdater software on your pc and then you connect your garmin nuvi to the PC.
Select the updates of your choice, whether the map updates or software update. It will bring up the latest update for you. Then you select the update and it will be installed on your garmin nuvi for you.
You cn download the webupdater from the garmin nuvi website. www.garmin.com
Or you can go to www.garmin.com, when the page is fully loaded, go the the support link, a slide will pop out, then you select what you want to update there, either the maps or software, then follow the rest of the instructions from there.

Try resetting the unit by pressing the reset button or on the newer 205's , turn off the power button then turn back on but hold the button for about 15 seconds till it reboots again. This should reset your unit. You should go to the Garmin site and update your unit. I will attach a link to the Garmin site. It will explain the update process and you can also find a copy of the owners manual if needed.

Updating the garmin nuvi 205w is quite simple. All you need to do is to connect the device to the computer that you have the garmin nuvi software on,then you go to the website www.garmin.com then you select support, a list will pop up, with the information update the software, then you back up the software that is on it, then you update the OS to the latest version, then you wait for it to update. When you are through with updating the software, disconnect the device from the omputer and power it on.

Finding a free map, would be a difficult task , as the maps are code locked . However if you have access to a keygen for Garmin you would be able to download. The following link , would set you in the right direction .Its a forum on Garmin users and how to access free maps

Try resetting your 205w some earlier versions have a reset button on the bottom, if not turn off the unit then turn on but hold it in the on position for about 10 seconds till it restarts.

Try updating the operating system software.

• Download and install, to your computer, the latest version of WEBUPDATER from http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27
• Connect your satnav to your computer and run the webupdater program.
  
• It will find any updates to the satnav operating system. Select all and install them.
• When the updates are installed webupdater will find optional updates. You don't need to install these unless you want to.
  

When they are downloaded safely disconnect your satnav and re-start it. This may solve your problem.

• Press WHERE TO
• Press ADDRESS

At the top of the screen you'll see the country you're in i.e. Canada. At the bottom you'll see CHANGE COUNTRY. Press CHANGE COUNTRY and select USA. You should then be able to enter the USA address.

If that does not work check that you have a map of the USA on the satnav. Press TOOLS, SETTINGS, MAPS. At the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO and it will show you the maps you have. If the USA is there but not ticked press it to tick it and then it should work. If it does not show the USA then it's not on the satnav. I hope this solves your problem.

You can charge the garmin satnav with either the car charger when the car is running, an optional mains charger or you can charge it through the USB port of a computer. It takes around 8 hours to charge through a computer or 4 from a car or mains charger.

There are no free maps. You can buy "lifetime map updates" which costs around 85 Euros. When you go to buy the update from the garmin website it gives you the option of a once off update or a lifetime update. If you buy the lifetime update you get to update your satnav 4 times each year for the lifetime of your satnav. Lifetime in this instance means the lifetime of your satnav not your lifetime.
