Open the Menu. Go to the "Setup Menu" (wrench symbol). Scroll to "Image Comment". Use the "Image Comment" or "Attach Comment" choices to change the Metadata information (up to 36 characters).

did you clean all contacts? never use anything sharp in or closet to a camera. To clean contacts in a camera and on the batteries, just use a dry cloth and a cotton swab. My 20 year old camera's (same brand and a canon) still work as the first day I used them. they are always stored dry and without a battery, when I don't use the for a longer period. Recheck the manual (yes most manuals from Nikon are still online) if you did setup the camera correct.

Put a drop of isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip and rub them. Make sure Asa dial is set to auto and not set on a fixed asa setting

If you think the contacts are dirty or oxidised, you could try to clean them with a cotton swap and a prop of contact oil. But be sure you can remove all the oil you apply. Be aware to move the contacts as little as possible. You are allowed to pus them in, but move them sideways can cause them to lose the correct position or worse they can be broken.
