Find out where the blockage in the hose is. Usually it is where the hose connects to the back of the vacuum , but it can be anywhere from behind the brushes to anywhere in the hose.

You probably need to change the belts. Here are the belts you need and the manual:

Check the ends of your brush roll. Most have bearings on the end and if one of those is locked up and will not turn it will burn the belt. Sometimes hair will get in the bearing area and will contribute to the bearing locking up.

Check the switch to the brush bar it might not be in the right position it needs to be in to run or not run should be in a little slot that turns it on and off

yes this machine has a thermal protector in it to shut off the machine if it gets to hot, this is normal. if there is no clogs in the hoses or in the machine then you will need to wash the filter at the top of the machine. you will have to remove the dirt cup and at the top you should see a half moon orange, well inside of this piece is the washable filter, clean and let it dry completly before putting back into machine. if this gets dirty and has not been cleaned, you can lose alot of suction. in some cases if this filter is not cleaned it can cause the machine to overheat so bad that it can damage the motor.

Turn the belt inside out. This problem stems from a design flaw in the mechanism that turns the hoover from bare floor to carpet. After taking it apart I realized that the spring that pushes the belt tight (to make roller spin) is not any where near strong enough to keep the brush rolling. My solution was to turn the belt inside out (there by essentially shortening the belt and allowing enough pressure to be applied to the roller to keep it spinning. Horrible design flaw. I am an engineer and find this pathetic. Hope this helps someone.

belts will stretch when they slip. There no adjustments on beater-bars. The way to prevent this is to have a height adjustment to be high on high pile and low for low pile rugs.

have you checked the belt for the brushbar it may av stretched and needs replaceing here is the manual on link belowhttp://hoover.com/file/556/

Are you sure you have the correct belt? The proper belt is # 59156500. It is 5/16" wide and about 2 1/2" in diameter. This is not a common belt.

There is a tensioner pulley that drops when you drop the handle down. It squeezes the belt against the roller making it spin. This part often breaks as well. Replace the flat belt, and check to make sure the v belts edges aren't rounded. If they are and the edges are not crisp replace that belt as well. DO NOT put the v belt under the tensioner pulley.
