Sounds like you've got a problem with either the Drive Motor, Drive Controller or Drive Belt.
It could be an easy fix but it depends on the where the fault is.
Does it make any noise or effort to open the tray?
If yes then its the Drive Belt thats either slipping or broken.
If you remove the top cover and then the cover off the DVD you'll see the drive belt at the front. If it's still in one piece then you can just remove it and get one a few mm smaller.

CAN'T RECORD TO VCR FROM TV
depending on the tv, use scart 2 as the connection as this usually sends the signal out as well as in, but set the recording channel as the av or scart input.
Dvd recordings from tv
You need to connect your incoming signal to the DVD recorder first. So either put your aerial lead (or cable as the case may be), into the aerial input socket at the rear of the DVD. If you are on cable with a scart, then just connect the scart from the cable box to the DVD & select the input source (ie AV1), this will allow you to record
When I try to watch
You need to try turning your tv not resetting the dvd player to a different channel. If you are using channel 4 try audio or game. So try that for on some channels all you get is sound and others picture. Good Luck. Ypur problem is minor just a pain till you have it all worked out.

If you are using RCA cables (Red Yellow White) the video (yellow) could be bad or not in the connector all the way. When the VCR mode is selected try pulling the yellow connector out then back in and see if anything changes on the tv.
