Hi you would have to buy a replacement drive that works that is the same as the one you zapped and change over the board to see if you did any other damage to the drive motor or send it to a recovery person which would probably be cheaper in the long run.

if your system some virus hope it is not read......better you try any other some card reader or pen driver if it read you try other OS ....

The only other thing could be a mechanical fault. If you still have a warranty on the thing maybe you should take it back for repairs otherwise its a total loss. Thanks

Well what happened to it? if it fell then chances are that you will not be able to fix it, due to the fact that harddrives have a shock or Gforce limit should a shock exceed that limit that the internal components will get damaged. getting it fixed is possible but will cost a small fortune due to the equipment necessary there are places where you can get it fixed. where about are you located?

This is a common problem. IF the external was unplugged during a operations, there is a possibility of hard drive corruption. Also, you mentioned it was on a MAC. If your buddy formatted the drive for the MAC (Which would be HSF) so PC won't see the filesystem anymore until you reformat for PC (FAT or NTFS). I understand you might not was to reformat, but that is my recommended answer to this issue. There is one other choice though. Try googling Diskwarrior. This program is pretty good at repairing corrupted harddrives and it pretty good at detecting filesystems. If disk warrior doesn't do the trick, I would go with reformating.

Hi, Please put your computer into safe mode before attempting to connect to the hard drive again. Safe mode turns some feature off when activated so whatever program is forcing the shutdown might have be paused when connecting to the external hard drive. Also, try connecting the hard drive to a non-laptop intermediary device and then connecting that device to your computer and attempting to access the hard drive folder within the intermediary drive. Medalist 4310 (ST34310A) built in 1999 (20 years old ) why use any drive this old. why? it's useless. my wild guess, is this you have a PC and ustated PC has SATA only ports (modern) and this old old HDD is PATA drive, with ribbon cable wide. and you think it can run on modern PC. well they do sell cards (PCI-e) that fit and work. 4.31GB is the size , holds about 1 top movie . are you going to boot from this drive, if yes, very complex answer I will skip here. Could be a lost boot sector. Download Testdisk and use it to recreate the boot sector.

you might have to go in and setup the drive. most new drives are not set up. you have to go in and setup the drive and format it for it to work
