Theres no sound coming through

At first consideration, the question appears a little vague. Any sound amplifier other than a simple two channel stereo system requires the appropriate driver signal(5.1, 6.1 et al ) in order to output sound to all speaker ports. If a stereo signal is fed in you will not get 5.1 or 6.1 or any other of the multiple speaker channel outputs from the speakers. The 5.1 or 6.1 etc. source signal must be provided on the medium you are playing or receiving for you to be able to hear it outputted on all speaker channels. If on the other hand you mean that "There is no sound whatever coming through any of the speaker ports no matter what you play into the amp" then the whole thing would need to be checked from input to output by a Technician to determine at which point the source signal is being lost on its way through the entire circuitry. In this case I would recommend you arrange for an fixed fee inspection which might include a minor repair up to that amount if that is what is found to be necessary.

You had a post that said you had fixed faulty power relays on DSP-a1 - how do you identify the relays that need cleaning?

That your amp does not go into the second stage of powering up indicates a fault which is causing it to sit in non-active mode. This could be due to blown output audio module or transistors or a fault in the safety circuit itself. It is not a fault the non-technician can repair and it would need to be sent to an authorized workshop. I have seen situations where users unknowingly leave frayed ends of wire shorting across the speaker output terminals which can lead to this sort of fault. You could check this out also.

Hi; The pre-amp input jacks

Are you saying you HAVE an external amp? Is it NOT theYamaha DSP-A1?

BOTH channels? That would suggest something common to them both, huh?

If it's only present on analog sources I would suspect a bad audio cable or a switch contact somewhere in the signal path. Typically, it might be a switch you rarely use, like a Tape Monitor or Mute. It's wise to occasionally (with power OFF) manipulate all manual controls throughput their ranges a number of times to wipe oxides from their contacts.

The problem may be within the unit, a connection behind the jacks. Bad solder joint maybe.

My Yamaha DSP A1 after

See Page 73 Troubleshooting.

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Can you help me connect my Yamaha hi-fi system? I

Your EQ will be connected to the amp via one of the Tape loops. Connect rec out from the EQ to play in on the A1 Tape input, and rec out from the A1 to play in on the EQ. Then select Tape Monitor on the A1 to hear sound with the EQ settings applied. It won't affect the surround channels, only the main ones. You can also connect the EQ across the pre out and main in sockets for the front channel on the A1
