I'm thinking of buying this VCR/DVR combo -

Usually, depending on the source, or channel, timer recording can be performed on a VCR; even this model.

The short answer is YES - you can record cable times or set manual scheduled recordings on this VCR. It depends on the channel(s) available in your area, and/or the source (such as cable receivers/set top boxes, etc.) which are intended to be recorded.

DVDs recorded from VHS with Toshiba DVR670 will

Possible that the format is not recognised or if a program needs to be installed into the PC for playback. If the VHS was not compressed and then digitised , the format can be having errors and so is not playing. we need to cross check this out before we can confirm the error. Please test with the recorded version on another PC and also try with another recorder.

We did use the Red & White RCA cable in

This is a combo unit (DVD/VCR), which should have RCA AV outputs on the rear - component video, DVD, and DVD/VCR. The latter output allows tapes to be heard and viewed, as well as DVD movies when the respective deck is selected via remote. There appear to be 2 S-video outputs on this model according to the user specs guide.

In other words, examine the rear of your combo unit - and connect the red-white RCA cable to the DVD/VCR 'OUT' sockets on the rear of the unit (L & R) and the S-video cable to the 5-pin socket in the same section if that is what you use instead of yellow RCA. This should fix the no-sound on VCR problem, and the bonus is it won't cost anything, and you don't need a workshop repair or setup quote.

You probably connected the cables to the main DVD output instead of DVD/VCR.

I hope this helps somewhat.

Can not get sound playing

What connections are you using for the DVD and VCR output for both the video and audio?
If you are using a "digital" signal (such as optical audio/HDMI/etc) the VCR audio will not pass through these outputs. You will need to connect up the analog (red/white) RCA connectors on the back of your unit to hear the VCR audio
I hope this help, Magoo

I have the same dang problem, same model. Now, on another board, a guy named Wade Terry said he found the solution--and he thanked the host and left without telling anyone what it was. Good work, Wade!

I placed a DVD+RW into

This is normal. You can interrupt the timer. If the recording has started, press Stop. Then select Yes (if you pressed Stop on the remote). If the unit has not started the timed record, then press Timer Set. Then press Timer Prog to check the status or change the settings of the scheduled programs. Alternatively, you should be able to eject the DVD or access the Setup menu after pressing Timer Set. When you press Timer Set again, you will again lock the DVD part of the unit until after the last scheduled recording is finished (assuming non-repeating events). As I recall, the Timer Set button is on the remote, second from the left on the bottom row of buttons.

If you have tried the Timer Set button, check if your remote is working. One way to check if the remote is sending an IR signal is to take a picture of the front of the remote with a digital camera (a cell phone camera will work). This takes two people - one presses the button on the remote while the other snaps the picture of the front of the remote. If you see a glow in the photo, then the remote is working. It's possible that the IR sensor or the input board has failed. These can often be replaced. Looking at the board for the part number will give you the best odds of finding a replacement (google the number). A Toshiba substitute remote which will match all of the features can be obtained here: http://www.remotes.com/remotes/servlet/rs?a=Search&o=c&uid=0&m=DVR670&uuid=12986040989660 .

The manual for the DVR670 is available from Toshiba: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=2805108&rpn=undefined&modelFilter=DVR670&selCategory=2797338&selFamily=2797342 . Click on User's Guide. If the above link is a problem, then try starting at the support home page: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp . Click on Downloads and use the drop down menus (DVD & Blu-ray, DVD Recorders, DVR670).

I hope this helps.
