GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven - Page 3 Questions & Answers
I have a GE Microwave
the bulbs are 40 watt 130 volt ac. I don't understand you said they blew. as in stopped working or flashed extreme then out? blowing a bulb is usually putting a dc bulb in the place of an ac or excessive voltage. there is a relay on the board that drives those lights. if the pin to a relay on back of the board shows exposed with the solder burned away, your can try to resolder it or replace the relay. the mother board for this microwave is no longer available through most distributors.

GE Spacesaver over the range microwave oven
GE Microwave ovens, and Microwave Ovens produced by GE but released under different brand names, have had several power problems for the past 20 years. Because it is so easy to sell parts and charge outrageous rates for repair GE never corrected the problems. They just continued it in the next model. They found that you would most likely purchase a new unit rather than paying $75. for a service charge, and $150. for labor plus parts (if out of warranty period).
Most failures were cold solder connections on the power relay board. These would come completely dis-connected after arcing and burning away the solder. Could be 1 month, could be years, but they knew it would happen. This power relay board feeds 120volts to the LV (low voltage) side of the HV (high voltage) Transformer. No High Voltage,,No cook. Everything seems to run normal, but if you listen carefully you will not hear the low tone from the HV Transformer. Over my thirty years in the business I have re-soldered rather than replace so many I couldn't count.
Next to that, a defective Magnetron.
GE XL 1400 Spacesaver is not heating things up AGAIN!
It's what, about 7or 8 years old? I'd buy a new one on sale. Probably not worth messing with just to squeeze out another year or two. You can pull out the Capacitor and take it to any electronics appliance repair place and have it checked for little or nothing, but if it's bad and you order a new one you have no microwave for a while. IF that's the ONLY thing wrong you're back in business.
Have a 10yr old ge
Yes it is definitely the magnetron and yes you could change it your self if you are good with electronics and tools (considering that the MAGNETRON DRIVER CIRCUIT is OK) but it is normally cheaper to buy a new microwave oven
Sorry!
How to Remove an OTR Microwave from the wall
first you need to take the grill off the front of the micro there should be two screws on the very top of the unit that allow you to take the grill cover off there also should be two screws in the cabinet above the micro that hold the unit in place some models have a silver hook or latch on the left side that you pull forward to release the unit from the back plate do not pull on this till you have taken out the two set screw on top of the cabinet after doing this the micro should come down
