HOW TO TEST A PHASE CONTROL BOARD ON KITCHENAID MIXER

I am sorry to say but only with a new one, about 30 bucks and five minutes of work, but if your mixer has any speeds working except only high (only high means it is the phase control board) then it is more likely the speed control board is bad rather than the phase board. Can you send is more info on what happened when the mixer started or stopped working. We can be of more help with more info

Laid down kitchen aid mixer for a couple of hours leaked a little oil

Your mixer has a vegetable based lubricating grease in it, that grease can separate from time to time. One way is non use the other way is end of life from normal use. If you do not use your mixer regularly, get a towel and put it on the counter, get your mixer and turn it upside down on the towel (to protect the finish) turn the mixer on while holding up the mixer (balance it) run the mixer for 2 minutes on speed 6, shut it off and turn the mixer rite side up and turn on again for 2 minutes, then repeat the process at least once. If your mixer continues to leak your lubricant is at end of life and it needs to be replaced along with a new motor housing gasket. KA will service it for you for about $100 dollars, you can do it yourself but it requires a full tear down of the mixer, you may have an "after warranty" service tech in your area but you will have to look for small appliance repair shops. If you do it yourself it will cost you about $20.00 bucks and a roll of paper towels as it is really messy. There are videos on utube that will show you how. The process I described above is a simple re-mix of your existing grease and in at least 60% of mixers I have repaired this is the problem with leaky oil / grease, it will last two or three years before it starts to leak again, longer if you do not use your mixer much, The grease is food safe and will not hurt you or anybody that may eat a recipe that might have a drop in it. But yes; I know it isn't really appealing to have grease dripping in your cooking. So the first thing to do is try and remix your existing grease, then try baking with it, if the drip has stopped your OK for a few years. If not you need to re-pack the grease and change the gasket. Also the existing gasket is fiber and when the machine is put together the screws that hold the upper and lower motor housing parts together is not torqued down very hard (that is intentional on KA's part), the weight of the upper motor housing is about ten pounds and after years of having the mixer sit on top of the gasket it compresses and allows the grease liquid, (once it separates), to leak out and to get all over the place. If you do decide to take your mixer apart you might try to just tighten up the screws that hold the two pieces together and try the re-mix process, that solution works on about 20% of all mixers I have repaired. Do this if you don't want to spend the 20 bucks on parts and grease. Let us know if this helped.

My KitchenAid K45 makes a loud grinding noise when started then softens a bit at a higher speed. What might this be and is it a repair that a very handy husband may succesfully accomplish??

Well Howard you are definitely editorializing with bad info. KA is the finest home mixer on the market in it's price class bar none! The question is about a K45 and not a pro series mixer and the two are totally different machines. The problem that this person has is the gearing in the mixer and one or more need to be replaced, more than likely the worm and pinion is going out and cost about !5 dollars for the complete tower gear and 5 for a new gasket and 10 for new grease. The problem can be repaired by DIY and there are several good utube videos on the subject, a repair shop will charge 60 to 100 dollars to repair and a KA service center will charge around 135.00 and the customer will have to mail it to them if they do not have one close to them. The K45 is a solid machine that has been made the same way since 1962 so parts are no problem. If you decide that you want to do it you will also need a couple rolls of paper towels because the insides of the machine will have to be completely cleaned to get rid of any metal shavings that were created when the gear failed. If you do not clean the insides and you leave any old grease with metal shavings in there then you may as well not even start the repair because the old shavings will cause the new gears to fail eventually.

No rotating movement from the mixer, only fast clicking sound after beater was lodged.

This is an excellent mixer and worthy of a professional or DIY repair.. You stripped a gear inside the mixer that is there just for that reason. Now the machine requires a tear down and replacement part. if you can post the model number we can advise on how to do it. If it is the new pro series model they cost between 4 and 5 hundred new to buy, the repair is going to cost between 80 and 100 dollars by a professional or about 30 dollars by you.

Agitator shaft replace

YesIf you have not gotten this taken care of yet. Turn your mixer upside down and remove the silver drip ring and then take out the drive pin with a punch, the pin holds the planetary on and in place. now with 2 screwdrivers from position 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock gently but firmly pry up until the planetary breaks loose and comes of the center shaft, now you will need some snap ring plyers to remove the agitator shaft, once you look at it you will see how to take apart easy.

Kitchen aid 5KSM150PS pin fallen out

The pin that you refer to is called the hinge pin, first get a towel and lay it out on a clean work space (to protect your finish) then turn the mixer upside down on the towel and look down into the base cavity you will see a small screw either flat head or Phillips style or maybe hex. get what ever driver you need to fit that screw ans turn it counter clockwise a couple times, then get a non metallic hammer and gently tap the pin back in until it is flush on both sides. then re-tighten the set screw that you turned counter clockwise, now turn it clockwise and give it a firm turn to set the screw again. If the pin comes out you have to do it all over again but this time you have to turn the pin 180 degrees to get fresh pin to drive your set screw into again, if it happens again you need to replace the pin. let us know if this helped.

My mixer is leaking oil. It has not been used that much.

Carefully pry the chrome ring from the gearhead of the mixer. Item 28 on this page :

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208212369.pdf

You will find 5 screws under the chrome ring. Tighten them and the oil (grease) will stop leaking from the gasket which seals the gearcase halves.

It just quit while I was using on high speed.

The lady's model is a K45SS and it does not have a Hall Effect Senor, Her machine di not go to high speed, it STOPPED!!, and that is all we know. If the mixer motor still runs or operates then it is a gear problem and yes it would be the nylon worm gear made to fail in order to protect the motor from burning out. if it won't start at all no noise or movement then it is an electrical problem and it could be the speed control switch the brushes the phase control board the govorner or the motor. what is needed is more information from the lady seeking help.

My KitchenAid mixer will not start on low speed.

As per the problem it indicates that the internal gears are got worn out or misaligned. Or the motor is got short, its only working at high speed.Once the internal parts has to be checked. Also it can be internal parts jammed fault. In that case only getting the parts greased will help. But if all checked out ok then the most possible option is "SPEED CONTROL BOARD.".This part controls the speed If it gets faulty then it will not let the mixer to work on all speeds. Its a $32 part.To see how the board looks see the fig below:-- helpmech_14.jpg
-------- You can get required parts for your mixer from the online sites.Click the link directly:--- http://www.marbeck.com/mixers_kitchenaid_parts.html --------------- But if the mixer is too old and if you have good offers for new mixer then you can go for the new mixer. But as per me ,i suggest get the old mixer repaired,if you have maintained it well. Its a good mixer and also kitchen aid is well known brand. Just get it confirmed to any local mixer repair store.Get the exact repair estimate before going for new. Also the required parts are available online. So you can go for repairing this one before going for new.---------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

This is the FAQ from the Kitchen Aid website. It explains very well how to make the necessary adjustments under the question: My flat beater, wire whip and dough hook are scraping against the bottom of the bowl when I use my mixer. How can I fix this?

KitchenAid mixer speed surges high and low uncontrolably

You can get the high speed back if you want to play with those three screws. there is a timing scheme for your mixer and it is set and adjusted by manipulating those 3 screws. The bottom center screw is for speeds 6 8 and 10. The best choice is to replace this switch, about $10 bucks on ebay.

Won't Turn On

There could be several problems some painful some not so much, the simplest one is bad wall plug or bad plug wire, the hardest is that the motor burned out, but i don't think so. The most likely solution is the speed control switch. There are three scres on the switch in an inverted triangle shape/form. The one on the bottom has probable been turned just enough to stop your mixer from working. The speed control switch that you use pushes against the screw every time you turn your mixer on eventually it can turn by pressure and it will shut your mixer off with just a 1/16th inch turn. It is a very simple fix.Where is the speed control switch? Glad you asked. It is in the rear of the machine. There is a round bubble shaped cover at the rear of the mixer called the end cover, it has one screw (Phillips head) on the top. Take that screw out, then grasp the cover and lift up and away from the mixer. Be careful there are two fragile hooks on the cover that can break if you twist it left or right, just lift up and pull away. when you have removed the cover you will see a black and copper plate staring back at you (it might be all dusty with flower and food particles) look for the adjusting screws at the top left and right corners and one at the bottom center of the plate. The one at the bottom center is the culprit. Take a Phillips head screwdriver and turn it left an eighth of a turn and turn the machine on, if it doesn't work leave the machine on and turn the screw in the opposite direction . ill bet a steak that the mixer starts. if it does you need to replace the speed control plate or take the screw out and put some lock tight on it. BUT!!!! when you do this you will have to completely re-tune the speed of the machine. So if it starts just leave it and you may have to do this once or twice again in the next ten or twelve years. Let us know if this fixed the problem. there are several other possible causes that could make the mixer stop but they are more painful.

On my Kitchenaid Artisan mixer the 3" silver rod fell out the back. How do I slide back in?

I an sorry but the only Rod in the back of a K45SS is the pivot hinge pin that holds the motor head onto the base. if it fell out then the answer is simple. Turn the mixer upside down and wiggle the base while sliding the pin back in. Once the pin is back in place, there is a set screw in the middle of the shaft that you can see while you are replacing the pin, turn this back down with a flat head screwdriver untill it is firmly against the hinge pin. The culprit of the problem is this set screw. It came loose and allowed your hinge pin to vibrate out and then fall down or fall out as you said. once the set screw is back in place you will be fine. To avoid this problem in the future you might remove the screw entirely and put a drop of "Lock-Tight" on it that will help hold the setscrew in place for a very long time.

Speed lever won't move on kitchen aid it is brand new this was the first time I tried to use it ,

If you have a really "Brand New" mixer then Kichenaid has the best "No-Hassel" return policy bar none, call customer support and they will send you a new one. If it is a new mixer still in box never used but is a couple years old then look for the warranty card and go on line to see if you can register it. They may let it by, just remember that you must mark it as received as gift and price payed unknown. if they let it pass then again call KA and they WILL send a new one. On to the more painful part, if the mixer is out of warranty and it has to be fixed the choices are:1: send it to your nearest KA service center either by taking it or mailing it. be prepared to spend $100.00 plus dollars to do it this way.2: send it to a local repar tech that has experience with KA probably $65 (what i charge) or maybe less. 3: Or do it your self, Not hard to do but!!! it can frustrate some people, go to KA site and get your parts list from that site for your model. then search the web for you tube videos that show you how to replace the grease, it will show you how to open and reclose your machine, then go to the speed control switch and locate the spring that is attached to it, i beleive that you will find that the spring has come loose and it is jambed in place (very tight space allowance in there) hook it back up and close up your machine and i bet a dollar to a donut that it runs fine. BTW if you find that it is not the spring being loose you will be able to diagnose the cause of the jam as the mechanism is very simple. hope this helps.

I took a KitchenAid K45 apart to clean (made in

What everyone is forgetting or they just don't know is that...The K45 introduced by Hobart in 1962 and was replaced in 1978 by the K45SS are two completely different machines. With completely different wiring systems. The K45 is wired together with wire nuts and the K45SS used connectors on the Speed control switch. All of the websites posted above are for the K45SS (Stands for Solid State) The manual for he K45SS is easy to get from Kitchenaid as the mixer electronics did not change from it's introduction in 1978 to 1986 when Hobart sold the Kitchenaid division to Whirlpool. The K45 on the other hand is a product and property of Hobart NOT Whirlpool or the Kitchenaid division of Whirlpool. The K45 Manual ... well I just can't find one! They way wires are routed is totally different in the K45 from the K45SS so the diagram in the K45SS manual does not help. Also the brushes in the K45 were square not camphor-ed like they are in the K45SS so there is no right or wrong way to insert the brushes in a K45. Whereas; in the K45SS there are four ways to insert the brushes in their holder and three of them are wrong. The K45SS brushes go into a completely different brush holder than the K45. The K45SS is the same today in 2012 as it was in 1978. The K45 is the same only from 1962 when Hobart introduced it to 1978 when it was replaced with the new Solid State model. prior to 1962 it was the K4-A model and it was different entirely. So if the people asking for help say their mixer is a K45 we should be asking for clarification as to a K45 or a K45SS.
