Gas smells come from leaks or the engine running too rich ( over fueled ). You need to inspect for any wetness/dampness around the fuel lines/rail and injectors if the smell appears from under the hood. If the engine is over fueled, a scan test can be performed to find out why. Sometimes oil leaks on/around the exhaust system can also give a fuel type smell. Have the vehicle checked for this also.
There are some safeguards which diagnose rich fuel conditions. If you have a hybrid which has a start-stop feature, this may be a reason for the smell.
Have someone check underneath the car for fuel line leaks just in case. If the system is running rich, a warning will appear. Sometimes old gas will make the exhaust smell stronger and if you used the E85 there will be more odor.
1) Call gas company IMMEDIATELY to check for gas leak that can cause explosion and fire.
2) Call plumber immediately to fix improper combustion or improper vent before toxic combustion by-product kills family. Gas appliances must vent toxic by-product outside and away from home where the gasses will kill the planet instead of you.
Leaking fuel pressure regulator , or leaking injector's ,depends on injection system . ! it's only running rich on right bank. whatever that means . Your vehicle is a v - 6 has two banks . right side of the engine an left side of the engine . Bank 1 is where #1 spark plug is . bank 1 is odd numbers 1-3-5 Bank 2 is even firing #'s 2-4-6 . What fuel injection system does it have ?
Your best bet mite be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.
You rubbed through the fuel tank or cracked it and it has a small leak. They make a fuel tank repair kit you can by a a auto parts store some times they work and sometimes they don't. If gas is spraying or leaking on the exhaust you could have a fire. I have drained a tank and put a screw with a fiber washer in the hole and then covered it with a 1/2 inch if silicone rubber it lasted for 5 years. Your fuel lines and filter are usually up on the side of the frame and should be ok
We smell it sometimes, too. Ever since we got it we sometimes smell gas. I think we got used to it and just assumed it was the pilot light doing things.
I have a 2002 Impala, and on cold days on the first start of the day had strong fuel smell. I troubleshot the problem to the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail was leaking around the seams. I replaced the regulator and have had no problems since. Hope this helps. Chad
