SOURCE: rattle from engine oil pressure light came on

new oil pump will cure the oil pressure problem but you will have to see if it helps the rattle in the top of motor depending on how much damage it has already caused

SOURCE: top end engine rattle 1989 sportster

That rattle if its a piston probably is the piston pin.If your piston were making the noise it would get louder and lock up sooner or later I would not run it until its fixed it will tear up your motor.

SOURCE: not getting oil to the lifters on my 1991

Have you taken the tappet oil screen out and cleaned it? It's the round plug that looks like it takes a large screwdriver to get it out. If so, then your oil pump is not working.

The oil pump has a slider valves in it. It's under the plug towards the outside of the pump. When the engine first starts, the oil pressure is directed to the tappets. Once the oil pressure rises above a certain level, the slider rises and then it allows oil to the bottom end. The tappets get the oil first.

The oil is pumped from the tappets up through the pushrods to the rocker boxes. Now, your rocker boxes are not going to be flooded with oil either. There may be a small puddle of oil somewhere but most of the oil drains back down to the bottom end of the engine where it is scavenged out and sent back to the oil tank.

If you do not have any oil pressure to your tappets, they will rattle like all get out. It'll be obvious. Now, there are three drive keys in the oil pump. One drive key for each set of gears, feed gears and scavenge gears. And, one drive key in the cam chest that drives the entire pump. Remove the oil pressure switch and spark plugs. Spin the engine with the starter. If no oil comes out of the hole where the oil pressure switch is, I'd advise pulling the cam chest cover (nose cone) off. Once you get it off, look at the gear on the end of the oil pump drive shaft. You'll be able to see the end of the keyway in the shaft. Now, notice if the slot for the key in the gear on the end of the shaft is aligned with the slot. If not, the key is sheared. If the key is sheared, you're probably had a tooth break off of the plastic breather gear and it's gotten caught in the scavenge gears and locked the oil pump up. You must remove and clean out the oil pump and replace the sheared key. If the breather gear is broken (or even if it's not) I'd recommend installing the new S&S Reed Valve type breather. It doesn't rotate and works great. Solves the problems in that area.

Good Luck

The oil pressure is fine. It may go lower once the bike is at operating temprature.

My Lincoln Continental 2000 Model oil light came on engine stopped after 25 feet. would not restart even though oil full. The car started the next day, but had a rattling sound at the top of the motor

Oil light is rather important it goes out if oil pressure is good comes on if oil pressure is low when it comes on damage is expected with continued operation like wearing of main bearings and pistons and cylinders can lead to a engine rebuild

Oil presure drops to zero when idle and about 10psi at 2000 rpm but has no noise or rattle

This is typical oil pressure on a Harley engine when it is hot. This is also why I suggest that you never install an oil pressure gauge on your Harley. All it's good for is scaring the fool out of you.

A Harley oilling system is a high volume low pressure system. Since a Harley engine is constructed using roller bearings in the bottom end instead of babbit shell type bearings, it will not hold oil pressure like the average *** bike. Take a drinking starw and cut it into sections about 1/2 long. Line the sections up in a row and notice that each section touch the table in one spot only. If an oil hole were there, it would be blocked and oil pressure would build up. But as soon as the roller moved, the hole will open and oil will flow with no resistance. This is why a Harley engine won't build up a lot of oil pressure, the oil flows freely into the engine.

I have a 2005 classic H-D that when hot the oil pressure drops to red?? I changed the oil and filter and Pipes to shotguns pipes to let it cool better but still the bike gets real hot and oil pressure...

I'm going to address this post but I have to tell you that I have no experience with the oil pump on the Twin Cams but I've got plenty of experience on the earlier type pumps.

Most early Harley's exhibit the same thing your bike is doing. A Harley Davidson engine has a high volume low pressure oiling system. It will not hold oil pressure like a Japanese bike. The reason is the roller bearing construction in the bottom end. The shell bearings in the Japanese bikes will hold oil pressure but the roller bearing bottom end with the gaps between the rollers will not hold oil pressure. Additionally, the oil pressure switch for the oil pressure light turns the light off at 4 pounds of pressure. Most oil pressure gauges are not accurate enough to measure such a low pressure.

However, make sure you're using the correct oil. Harley recommends 20W50 oil. Their Syn3 oil is probably what came in your bike. It's is recommended for using in climates with maximum ambient temps of 100°F. If you have temps higher than that, you can go to straight 60 weight. Make sure the oil you use is rated for use in diesel engines. Look for the API code. It should say something like "SJ/CG". What you're looking for is the "C" rating. This is the diesel rating. Most standard motor oils today do NOT have the diesel rating unless you specificly look for diesel engine oil. The oil companies leave the additives for diesel use out of most engine oil now so you get better fuel mileage.

Your engine is equipped with hydraulic tappets. If your oil pressure gets too low, the tappets will collapse and the engine will start to rattle badly. You will know without a doubt that your oil pressure is too low. However, go talk to your local Harley dealer about your concern. Most dealers don't charge for answering questions.

Theres a sound on the top head and it sounds like lifters. also it wont boost and the oil pressure is low, very low, can i get help with this please

Lifers will rattle if oil pressure is low. Have you screwed in an oil pressure guage to check. Should read about 20 psi at idle and 40-60psi above idle.
Causes are nemerous from low oil level to worn out engine. You dont mention mileage. Normally very good engines.
