Hydraulic clutch is not disengaging, when put into 1st gear the engine conks out. Replaced the master cylinder and bled the line - still conks out. Do I need too replace the slave cylinder or what?

1988 VT800 hydraulic clutch is not disengaging, when put into 1st gear the engine conks out. Replaced the master clutch cylinder and bled the line - still conks out. Started it in gear and rode around - so the clutch plates are not stuck. Do I need too replace the slave cylinder or what?

    Thanks for your feedback.
When put into 1st gear the bike lurches forward and conks out like the clutch was popped without giving it gas. the bike still idles and revs in neutral. But you think it might be the carburetor?

  • john h Jul 07, 2016

revs and idle show carb is ok that wasnt explained previously -reason stated carb was possible bog like condition when giving gas and releasing clutch --but seem like a problem with slave or alignment with clutch ---are you able to shift when riding or is it only isolated to 1st gear if problem with others try rebleeding first than if still problem will have to tear into clutch and check clearances and slave

    I agree with john here
you description of the problem is confusing and you are not responding to replies in a fashion that helps to define the fault
As we understand it --you can select first gear with out slashing it but haven't bothered to change gears on riding it
next it starts and runs in gear for the ride but doesn't stall when stopping as it would do so if the clutch was not disengaging
It starts and idles ok and obviously runs when in gear as you are riding it
Now if we have a reasonable understanding of your problem it is not fuel or clutch but more in the gearbox itself
as suggested a dragging clutch plate , clutch adjustment ,bad input shaft bearing or other bearing problems
It would now be appropriate time to pull the clutch out and check as per specifications , even to the type of oil in use in the clutch plates area

As per your description problem not clutch since able to start in gear and drive without stall problem sounds more like a fuel delivery not the clutch

If you started it in gear and rode around on it then the clutch plates can be stuck if it didn't stop the engine when the clutch was disengaged and the brake applied
if you can get it into first gear using the clutch without grating/slashing gears , the clutch is working
the problem in that case is somewhere else

Replaced clutch and slave cylinder in 2012 Kia sportage and car will not go in gear with engine running

Did you get all the air out of the hydraulic lines and master and slave cylinder, if not the clutch will not fully disengage and you can't go into gear. If this is the case have it vacuum bled.

New clutch not disengaging

When I do clutch jobs. I replace the clutch package(comes with the slave) and the master cylinder also. Have the flywheel turned or replaced. Just a note. The clutch plate can be installed backwards. No matter how many times you bleed it, It won't work.

My 1999 accord wont shift into gear while its on but will when its off its a 5 speed.

It's your hydraulic clutch system that probably isn't working. When you press the clutch pedal down, it causes the clutch master cylinder to put pressure in the line to the transmission's little "slave cylinder" that operates the clutch inside the transmission bell housing. This disengages the engine from the transmission so you can shift gears. It's probably not putting the slave cylinder to work by hydraulic pressure. The clutch master cylinder is mounted on the firewall, similar to the brake master cylinder, the clutch cylinder has a reservoir and you may need to add brake fluid to it. If it is dry, then you will need the system bled at the slave cylinder by a pro or someone who understands how. Pretty simple, really, just like bleeding brakes. Also the clutch master cylinder can develop internal leaks and this will lead to loss of clutch.

Hydraulic clutch in a 2001 nissan altima gxe 5 speed manual

Open the hood and look for the clutch master cylinder.
It is smaller than the brake master cylinder, but should be very near it.
The clutch master cylinder is about half the size of the brake master cylinder.
Take the lid off and see if it is full.
If it is empty, the likely problem is the slave cylinder (which is mounted on the transmission at the other end of the brake fluid line), has failed and needs to be replaced.
It will likely not do any good to fill the clutch master cylinder, as you will trap air in the line.
The slave cylinder will need to be replaced, and the line bled to get the air out.
Be blessed.

I have a 93 mighty max just replace the clutch throwout bearing and pressure plate --now the problem is i can not get the clutch to engage enough to shift gears-- i have taken everthing back off to...

Do you mean you can't get the clutch to DISengage? You need the clutch to disengage - 'unlock' the transmission input shaft from the flywheel - in order to change gears.
If you put the transmission in 1st gear and start the engine and the truck starts moving with the pedal depressed, the clutch IS engaged. I think you mean that you can't get it to disengage so you can stop without killing the engine, and can change gears without a lot of grinding.
If this is the case, check to see that the clutch cable or linkage (if you have mechanical linkage) is properly adjusted, or that you hydraulic lines and slave cylinder are bled if you have a hydraulically controlled clutch.

I have to force the shifter into gear (all) or I can not get it to shift at all. the clutch level fluid is at max. the clutch does feel soft. Once in gear I can shift thru the gear, but hard. Some...

If you can put it into gear easily without the engine running but it grinds or is hard to put into gear when the engine is running then the clutch has not fully disengaged. If the clutch does not slip once you are moving then the clutch is not likely the problem. Instead you will have a faulty clutch slave cylinder and/or clutch master cylinder. The best thing to do is have both replaced and be sure that they are properly bled of all air. If the clutch does slip then it will of course need to be replaced, and be sure to have the pressure plate re-surfaced! Then there is the possibility, albeit rare, that all three need replacement.

I have a 2000 chevy s-10 2.2 engine. I have to push all the way to the floor to shift and still have difficulty shifting gears. what might be my problem?

Your truck has a hydraulic clutch , that works just like brakes. A master cylinder connected to the foot pedal sends fluid to a salve cylinder inside the bell housing. If there is any air in the lines , the slave cylinder will not move far enough to disengage the clutch. The lines can be bled of air bubbles much the same way a brake line can be bled. Hopefully this is the problem. A worn out Master cylinder is not too big of a job to replace , however , on your vehicle the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing of the transmission , and replacing it would require removal of the transmission. If you are not loosing fluid out the slave cylinder it is probably ok.

1991 jeep wrangler not shifting into gear could this be clutch

I would first bleed the tranny lines, if that doesnt work then your tranny is out and need to get it replaced. FYI with Jeep Wranglers, It is better to get a new transmission then to rebuild them
