Are you sure this is the VIN number? A motorcycle VIN has 17 digits in it so the number you have isn't long enough and should contain more letters. The VIN is stamped on the right hand side of the steering tube that the pivot for the forks goes through.
The 10th digit letter is the year code for that bike.
*Note* The date given is the date of manufacture NOT the date it was first registered for road use. Another issue is that anything before 1980 may not have a date letter.
You can sometimes get a general idea of the bikes age by how it actually looks. The styling has changed over the years so that might give you an idea of which generation it is.

The VIN number should be 17 characters and found on the frame....should start with JYA

Now count off from the left to the 10th character,,,,,,,
if its an A its a 1980 model, B is an 1981, C is a 1983.

the 4H7 in the VIN means its an XJ650H model made in 1980 & 1981, Look up XJ650 on the net for more info on your bike.

You can determine the exact year and model of your bike by look at the frame VIN number. Then, go to this site and look up what each letter or number means in the VIN on your bike.

well in the good old USA if you have a 16 digit VIN number then the 10th digit will always denote the model year of the vehicle and that applies to all vehicles with a 16 digit VIN. The coding for them simply starts with the letter H and they leave out a few choice letters such as I O Q Z and then it starts into numbers after Y and honestly after the year 2009 Im not sure what they have gone to as Im not currently working in a dealership anymore, however here is a chart that I made to help ya get it figured out. There should be 17 alpha neumeric digits. Check the VIN on your title. If less than 17 digits then the bike is more than 10 years old. Take the bike to a dealer, buy some oil and spark plugs then have them look at the bike when they ask what year the bike is.

the number on the frame is called the VIN and it consists of 17 digits, the rule is the 10th digit from the left identifies the year, so your bike is a 03 model.

The engine number will not give you what you need. The VIN is the key. You will find the VIN number stamped into the center steering stem that the forks attach to. Call a Yamaha dealer with the VIN and they can tell you what year and model of bike you have.
