A long time ago, Honda's had a parking lite, believe it or not. You would turn the key all the way past off and remove it to engage the tail lite. To just turn the bike off, take the key out at off if it comes out ok.

The battery and stator. Both needs to be checked and replaced. The stator charges the battery when bike is running. If the battery is old, as per me battery life is approx 2 to 3 years. In your case battery not holding charge. Replace the battery, this should take care of problem. But if problem is same then stator also has to be replaced.-------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

SOURCE: The new battery on my 2002 honda shadow sabre won't stay charged

please check your rectrifier. or simply do this to check if there is a short circuit,
turn it off
detach the positve wire on the battery
then put it back again
when the wire touches the positve pole and spark, it has a short circuit
disconnect it and check the wiring

Locate the wires coming out of the motor. There is a plug with three yellow wires, check the three yellow wires coming out of the motor for continuity. Any combination of the three yellow wires should have continuity. But there should be NO continuity between any of the three wires and ground. If any of the yellow wires are grounded you have a bad stator. If the stator checks good you probably have a bad voltage regulator/rectifier.

SOURCE: tail light stays on with

Hi the tail light can stay on if the ignition is turned past the off position till the park position, this provides a park light .
The lack of starting could be many problems, like a clutch or side stand switch, and the battery may be on the way out. So depending on if the bike is complete, you will need to start with a tune up, service, carb clean and get out the multi meter, to start checking the start system wiring.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 Honda

Hi, asuming the battery is in good condition and has no dead cells, sounds like you have a charging problem, this could be simply a loose conection caused by corrosion, check the plug at the regulator rectifier, gently pull on the wires at the plug on both ends, look for corrosion, separate the plug and check inside it for corrosion, clean if ness, running a motorcycle with a discharged battery can cause damage to the machines electrical systems, including frying the ecu and stator, under normal conditions a. Battery can last up to 3years, (some may last longer) if in any doubt replace the battery

1987 Honda VT 1100 tail light stays on when bike is turned off. Not the break light, just the tail light there ofr draining the battery. I disconected the positive to keep from draining.

Are you sure the fault does not lie in the ignition switch. My Honda vf750 used to have a parking light, which you turned on by turning the key clockwise then taking the key out and not anticlockwise like normal. I'd make sure that it is not actually turning the light on at the ignition switch first.

Tail Lamp Stays On

You turned the ignition key to the wrong position when you took it out of the bike. that is the 'P' park position. It allows you remove the key to leave the bike on the side of the road with the tail lamp on as a warning in case you break down or in an emergency.

My vulcan tail light stays on after with the ignition switched off. What can I do to stop this reoccuring

The ignition switch has three positions. Off at 6 o'clock, on at about 7 o'clock and park at 9 o'clock which will leave the tail light on and also shut the bike off. Just have to make sure when you turn the ignition off that the key is straight up and down.

Are you sure that the key is in the off position. Many motorcycles have a "PARK" position that allows you to park the bike, pull the key, and leave the tail light on. Try turning the key to different positions until every thing is off. If you can remove the key now you have found the "OFF" position.

I think your bike is being powered through the starter solenoid by a defective starter button. The starter button is on the right switch assembly and normally turns the headlight off when depressed halfway. A wire may be plugged in wrong in the headlight (Two wires are crossed). Take apart the right switch assembly and check for shorts and power from the solenoid ). Check the main wire harness to the handle bar switch for crossed wires (they are color coded).

Rear brake light stays illuminated on my trail bike

you will have to check the switch which should be situated at the back of the pedal . the switch may be over tight and causing the light to come on .
Check also that the wiring may be swapped as the tail light may be using the brake lightbulb .

When I turn on the power in my Virago 2002 XV250R

motorcycle headlights stay on at all times the bike is on, kind of like running lights on a car. on some model bikes, when you first turn on the key the headlight doesn't turn on so that there is less draw from the battery so your starter can use the current your light doesn't. but once the bike is started or the start button is pushed, the headlight will remain on until you turn the key off.
