Look on the right side where the oil level site glass is. There is a chrome cover to the left of that which is held on by two bolts. You have to remove that cover to add oil. Ride your bike for a few minutes to get the oil warm,it's NOT a good idea to let it just sit there running since its air cooled. Shut it off and let it sit for a little to allow the oil to run back down; then make sure the bike is level when you check the site glass. A mechanics mirror, or someone sitting on the bike holding it upright is helpful. Do NOT go over the full line ,just below it won't hurt. It holds just over 4 quarts .
Here is a schematic, parts list, and prices for your 2004 VL 1500. Friction disks wear out and have to be replaced at regular intervals. Clutch slipping is almost always remedied by replacement of the friction disks.
holds 3 us quarts of oil with a oil filter change or if the egine was complety drained after overhaul it takes 3 1/2 us quarts of oil.
To check oil look for a small quarter size window on the clutch case, oil level should fill half the window to be full.Bike must be held level while viewing window, not on kick stand.
Take the two hex screws out of right side rear cover and remove the chrome cover. The clear lens is the oil level check. The oil filler is to the left of the clear lens oil check.
The oil filter is under the battery, and the oil drain plug is toward the back underside of the engine.
Warm engine and stand upright on centerstand to drain oil, let drain for 15 minutes.
does the clutch lever release "sharply" and snap back after engagement? then lean bike over drain about a quart of oil, take off access cover to clutch and check to see if you have any broken clutch springs. if thats looks o.k. you"ll probably need new clutch plates. a real quick check when you ride the bike smell the oil, does it smell burnt? if it does, the plates are probably no good.
You need to buy a volt meter and set it on 10, or 20 v-. Start the bike and see what it says. A good charging system will show 13-14+ volts. If the meter says 11-12 volts or does not change, you have a bad stator, or rect/reg. Take to a shop to have it further tested. Chaz Moto DC
the fuse panel is under the speed sensor cover. it is the chrome cover on right side of bike. the same cover you have to remove to put oil in it. it is the one that does not have the oil sight glass in it. only 2 allen bolts hold it on.
