I HIT A BUMP AND THE BIKE TURN OFF - 2004 Yamaha YZF-R6

Sounds like when you hit the bump in the road, you have done something to the wiring of the Sym Jet 4. Could be an earth problem there Jamie so, carefully check all your connections right back to the fuse box. and also check your fuses you might have blown one with the Impact.

If not an engine problem then it sounds like something is loose (sorry to state the obvious). Could it be your sidestand because as you are checking for the visible, the stand will be down as you look around the bike and is only up when riding. Hitting a bump or normal vibration could cause it to hit against something (exhaust, frame etc.)

You didn't say what year or model bike you're working on but if you're talking about tightening the steering head bearings, this is a job best left to a dealership. On most models of Harley's there is a specific "break away" poundage that the front end needs to be adjusted to. Tighter or looser and the handling of the bike is effected tremendously. And, are you sure this is what the problem is? There are a lot of things on the front end of some bikes that can make a noise when you hit a bump.

Check the kickstand saffety switch to see if it is shorting out when you hit bumps.

Wonder about your stoplight, taillight? Most of that stuff runs off the accessories fuse. Check that fuse to see if it is blown. If it is, replace it and see what happens. If it blows immediatly, you've got a dead short somewhere. If it stays there, you may have an intermittent short. The intermittant short is a bear to find because it's tough to fix a problem when it ain't there. Electrical problems are always difficult and this about the best information I can give you. It's a starting point.

i would be checking the lower ball joints if they arent replaced soon they will come undone at the worst time and you will then need a tow truck or flat bed

does your bike have a kickstand switch...maybe hitting the speed bump caused the stand to move and killed the engine...also i think your bike has a tilt switch under the seat near the gas tank not real sure on the location but it just sounds to me like what would happen if you hit the kill switch...just throwing out some ideas let me know it it helped.

Your battery is most likely very flat, it has enough power to run your lights but not enought to turn over your engine to start it. Best thing to do is try to bump start it if the bike is a manual, put the bike into 2nd or third gear down a hill, get the bike rolling with the clutch in and let the clutch out when you get to good rolling speed. the bike will **** into life. Let the bike run for a good 20 mins. Battery should be recharged enough to start the bike again.
If the bike is an automatic you will have to use a battery charger.

did you look under the car to see if anything was hanging down?

i would check if you have a short somewhere.....but first make sure your battery connections are tight....gauges turning off and on while riding is usually a sign of a loose connection meaning you hit a bump or something and it briefly clips out...did the bike actually turn off??? i dunno....but that seems to be a very odd problem....take out the battery, put it on a trickle and let it charge to full cap....then reconnect making sure the terminal connections are secure and see what happens.... if that works, we''ll have to start diagnosing further, but like they always say, check the obvious first !
