1997 cb500 won't start

Always started on the button until today: now won't fire up. Battery is ok (new) reading 13.5v before load. Vaccuum fuel tap is ok (outlet emits fuel when engine turned over or syringe used on vacuum line to drop pressure on same,) opening drain screws on carbs shows fuel so presume fuel getting to carbs, holding spark plug to engine shows spark. I am at a loss as to where to look next.

    thanks for that Knight

I will take the plugs out tomorrow when I get another spanner(my own spanner is not long enough) and just replace them anyway so I'm sure they haven't broken down etc. The choke mechanism appears to be working ok and I did use it when attempting to start. Operating the handlebar lever moves the rail in front of the carbs sideways and allows the brass rod to slide out to the right. Also, there is a power restrictor on the bike to reduce hp for novice riders (my son), this being a rubber intake reducer on the air filter carb inlet. I looked at this and it seems ok in that nothing has fallen inside or blocked the opening.

no clicking noise (I presume you mean is the starter solenoid engaging?) All electrics work inc. neutral light and engine turning over as normal and with prolonged turning over smell fuel in exhaust so surely have to be gettin fuel to cylinders. I will have new plugs in place in about 4 hours and will post result then.

    cheers

Do you hear a clicking noise when you try to start it? Does all of the usuall lights light up? Is it attempting to crank over or is it not doing anything at all? Neutral light on?

    Hi Carrickleagh,

Have you checked the spark plugs?

Remove the spark plugs and examine them, clean em up and retry, check the gaps too.

Have you tried to start her up by using the choke?

    Hope this helps!.

My carbs are leaking lots of gas out of drain lines like a gallon every ten miles. I have the carbs off now and am trying to find problem but all looks OK. What can I adjust to make the carb stop filling the bowl once it is full??

Finally sorted when I replaced both plugs. I've never come across one failing instantly before in 30 years of motorcycling (maybe that's because I ride old bm's!)

I have a 1997 Pajero, I topped up the oil this morning and now it won't start, it's not the battery or engine, it looks like there is no power to the fuel pump, can anyone help??? Please

The adding of the oil is more than likely just a coincidence . If you don't have power at your fuel pump check to make sure your fuel pump fuse is good. Also in the trunk you should have an emergency fuel pump cut off button. ( normally on left side rearmost area behind the plastic panel ) there should be a hole in the plastic to poke your finger in to push the reset button. If those are ok then check to make sure your fuel pump relay is working. Find that, turn key all the way to on but not starting. Listen for fuel pump to turn on for a few seconds ( priming the system ) if it don't use the handle of a screw driver and tap on the relay and if it clicks and fuel pump runs then your relay is failing. Replace that with a new one.

Where is the battery on a cb500 twin 98

Lift the seat. and buy a manual. then try bump starting the bike, when it is running let it sit for a while. If the bike has been sitting with a flat battery for more than about 1 month you will more than likely need a new battery. Try Wemoto for parts and batteries.

My 2003 chevy malibu cranks but wont start. battery is good and altenator is good

To clarify - - if the engine cranks the battery and starter are ok.
The alternator does not come into play until the engine is running.
If it cranks but won't start, you have to figure out if you are missing fuel to the injectors or spark to the plugs to proceed.
A mechanic would check that and if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer.

hi there mwb15
have you made sure the ignition coil is producing enough voltage to fire under compression load ?

you may get a spark at the plug unloaded but under load it may be breaking down / weak making you think its got a fuel problem ?

does your system use a cdi coil system or point/condenser system ?
spark usually falls into weak spark, no spark catergory

if compression , fuel ( you replaced carb) and exhaust are ok , and you have air and vaccuum tight c/cases only things left are timming and spark

remember F A C T S

F = Fuel A = Air & ( air tight c/cases ) C = Compression T = Timming S = Spark

compression should be about 130- 140 approx if in good running order

take a look and let me know

1997 chevy blazer 4.3L cold hard start have to add gas to carb to start hot start is fine changed fuel filter and battery new battery it will eventually start but runs down battery.

There may be a problem with the fuel pump itself or the truck may need a basic tune-up. Those would be the first two things to check. Pull a spark plug and see how it looks. If it is in really bad shape, it won't be able to fire properly and this will lead to hard starting. A set of plugs and plug wires can really wake up an older engine. The second thing to check if those are ok would be the fuel pump itself. It may be weak and take longer to build proper fuel pressure. This will have to be checked by a mechanic. The fuel pressure is very high and there are special tools that will be needed.

Hi, I have the same problem on my CB500 and have out it down to a sticking solenoid. Even though there is a click this doesnt neccessarily mean the solinoid is closing the contacts, a gentle tap with a hammer on starter/solenoid frees mine up and she starts fine - for a couple of days then another love tap is required.

Other than replacing the solenoid does anyone know if this is repairable?
