Check it is charging. The voltage of the battery should be about 14 volts with the engine running at just above idle. If it is lower than this (which I suspect) you will need a new regulator or rectifier. to identify which of these you need will require a visit to an auto electrician.

Take it back to where you got it and make them refund your purchase price. If they refuse and you finianced it go to them, There a law called "The Lemon Law" that makes it unlawful to sell something like that. Sounds like you sure bought one. loose or broken ground wire ,could be broke under insulation, vibration of motor makes it lose contact. probably on gear indicator switch.

your bike is a 4 speed, 97 and after are 5 speed

If you're getting no lights then it is either the ignition switch or the battery is not making connection. Check the battery with a multi-meter. Check the fusebox with a multi-meter, any power to any fuses there with key on?

possibly but check your battery tems and cable first. is the the motor turning over when it doesn't start? if not check clutch switch also.
