I dont know what that code means but should not be hard to find out. Never change anything on your car guessingg that it is the problem. there might be a faulty sensor or a broken wire and you went out and spent alot of money and headache to put a new transm !!!!!since your problem is defenitly not the transmission, i would say there is poor comunication between the gear box and ecu

it could be the spark plugs, at least that is what it was for mine, if you have over 50k miles without a spark plug change i highly suggest one, also a oil /transmission change would be great for your car too if you haven't done those reciently. I would also suggest using a higher grade gas, sometimes this fixes the trick too.
If you try all those and still experiencing hard transitions please let me know and i'll try a more indepth analysis on your car.
Thanks jyotsna.

Depending on how Cold it is where you are, The cold will effect the Operation of the Tranny. I am pretty sure that your Tranny is Fine, Just Really Cold. Depending also on where you live, I use Valvoline Quick Change to service my Vehicles when I am on the Road. Have never had a Problem with them. On the Fluid, They make so many Different Kinds now adays that it is hard to Choose. Look in the Back of your Owners Manual and Use what is Suggested in there.
SOURCE: Spinning My Wheels!! ---- P0421 Code Mitsubishi Galant
I have the same vehicle, same code P0421, changed the BOTH O2 sensors and the check engine light was still on, took it to my fathers garage and checked the Catalytic Converter, and it was ok later I found out that P0421 means that the vehicle doesn't have the proper mixture of gas and air (running richer) so I changed the MAX air flow sensor and wala the code went away.

The best way is to make sure you give the correct information IE: yr, make, engine size, and VIN. That will ensure the correct trans. As far as knowing if it is a good trans, the best advise I can give is to make sure it is a reputable parts dealer, and make sure it is a low mileage trans (if used), make sure they offer a warranty, and have them or yourself pull the pan to inspect it for metal shavings.

Check your motor mounts, recently engine idled rough when in nuetral or stopped in drive, also jerked when put in reverse. took it to a automotive shop and found motor mounts cracked. Runs great now
