You need a professional mechanic with a scanner. Never drive a car with a flashing check engine light except to get it off the road. Flash = serious issue.

SOURCE: 2000 Volvo s70 sedan won't run smoothly when holding it at a steady acceleration

Sounds like fuel starvation. Would suggest cleaning any filters in the fuel line or replacing.
Also check the stop idle valve. This should be inline in the air intake pipe to the intake manifold..
Remove it and clean with WD40.Make sure you note the orientation of the spring.
To reset the ECU disconnect the battery for 5 minute the reconnect. The ECU should reset to factory settings. Make sure you know radio and alarm codes!
Try petrol additive STP or Redex to clean inside the engine.
Thats as far as my knowledge goes, hope it helps.

SOURCE: 1998 Volvo V70 with potential transmission problems?

Yes, it's the 'pnp' switch (also known as the inhibitor switch) which is on the side of the transmission.

I own 2 Volvo 960s (3 litre automatics) which are similar in many respects ... and have that flashing arrow. It's a well known fault and you don't have much to worry about.

Rather than write it all here, you can read what I wrote as an ebay guide about it at http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-960-Automatic_W0QQugidZ10000000003233806

I did put similar info on my website at http://www.glennsmart.btinternet.co.uk/volvo960.html with photos

Though the ebay guide is better ...

If you haven't got time to read it ... forget the flashing arrow and put a bit of black tape over it ... My wife's car has (192,000 miles) had that arrow flashing for 3 years. My car (100,000 miles) has had that flashing arrow since I bought it 1 year ago.

I did change the pnp on both cars ... but you also need to have the computer error reset by Volvo to have the light extinguished. Don't worry ... keep driving.

SOURCE: Flashing upside down arrow/ slow acceleration

This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.

1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.

Hope this tick help
Good luck

Corsa utility 1.4 failing to start and it is not giving a spark. it flashes the spanner light about 5 second after turning the key on please tell me what is the problem

Hello Sibusiso,

(From the 2009 Corsa Owners Manual)

Your Immobilizer system checks whether the engine is allowed to start with the key being used. If the transponder in the key is recognised, the engine can be started.

The electronic immobiliser activates itself automatically after the key has been removed from the ignition switch. If control indicator "spanner light" flashes when the ignition is on, there is a fault in the system; the engine cannot be started.

Switch off the ignition and then repeat the start attempt.
If the control indicator continues flashing, attempt to start the engine using the spare key and seek the assistance of a workshop.

Ford Taurus being a ********

Lets start at the beginning.
You say it cranks but will not start, right ?
The warning lights are supposed to come on with the key on and then go off once the engine starts.
If the engine cranks but will not start, someone will need to figure out if it is lacking fuel to the injectors or spark to the plugs, or something else. One way we check it is to look for spark at the plugs, check the fuel pressure, and try starting fluid in the throttle body.

Shift into D the N started flashing green .

Try moving the shift lever from D towards the next gear away from N (not all the way, just hold it a little bit over). If the N light goes out and the D light acts normal, then your shift linkage needs to be adjusted so the transmission goes into gear exactly when the shift lever is in a detent.
If that isn't the problem, it's time to get a readout of the engine error code to see where the problem is. You can get this done at most car parts stores, or they may let you use their engine code analyzer yourself if you give them a deposit on it. (The two hardest parts are getting down under the steering wheel to plug it in and deciphering the error code.)

I have a 96 Cavalier LS 2.4L, it died on the road while my wife was driving. Some numbnut tried to jumpstart it and hook up the cables wrong... So far I have replaced the bettery, starter, ignition switch,...

After you put in the ecu, do the crank relearn, everyone knows how to do that since its common knowledge, and you're good to go.
Here is how it's done: Ensure that your battery is fully charged before attempting the relearn procedure. Do not leave any battery charger or jumper cables attached to the battery. Close the hood completely. Some applications require that the doors remain closed during the procedure.
96-99 chevy
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start).
Allow the key to return to the all position (same as if the vehicle would have started). The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
2. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns oft) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle. The vehicle should start on this cycle.
3. Once the vehicle is running, the password relearn is complete.

00 + chevy
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start). Allow the key to return to the on position. (same as if the vehicle would have started)
2. The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.

Thank you for using fixya and keep me posted, be glad to help you get the car running 100% again

I have a 1994 Volvo 960 and the arrow is flashing on the dash plus the W,S,E buttons are blinking and the car won't start now. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

The lights indicate a problem with the transmission. The fact that the engine wont start, leads me to believe that the PNP (neutral safety switch) is the problem. You will have to have the vehicle scanned to make sure.

Flashing lights

Hi, had the same problem today. Solution: Start engine, blower on max, air direction to cabin, press rear wiper and rear wash buttons simulanteously for 5 seconds (all lights now on steady). Calibration test starts and lights flsh alternately. After first test, AC and recurculation lights flash for the cool down test. If all test pass then rear wiper light blinks slowly (press to exit self test). If AC and recurculation test fails then just 2 lights stay on. To repeat this part of the test press just AC and rear wash simulanteously ( may take several attempts and usually best when engine is cold). Again exit by pressing the rear wiper button once it is the only one flashing (slow blink).

This does work but it took me 15 minutes to finally switch them off!!!
