The microswitch for the Volvo S40 trunk lid is located inside the trunk lid panel. On the left side of the trunk lid panel, you should be able to locate the access panel for the microswitch. Remove the panel to access the switch. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and remove the mounting screws to remove the microswitch. Install the replacement switch by tightening the mounting screws and reattaching the electrical connector. Test the switch to make sure it works correctly and then reinstall the access panel.
try having someone jiggle the trunk up and down from the outside while you pull on the emergency release from the inside, you may have a problem with the wiring in the trunk itself, the wires have a problem chaffing where they come out of the trunk lid and go into the car, you can disconnect both ends and replace that for about $30
Boot is the trunk, right? Find the switch in the trunk, maybe the wire fell off, or the switch has failed. Temporarily you might be able to either disconnect or ground the wire to turn the light off until you can get it fixed.
If you open the boot and close the boot latch (in the middle of the boot lid)with a screwdriver or something does the boot light go off when you press the little plunger for the boot light? If it does not it may be the boot latch. It's also worth checking the wiring loom on the right of the boot by keeping the boot plunger pushed in with the boot latch closed as above and squeezing the wiring loom in various places to see if the light goes off as it should.it may be a damaged wire in the loom......
Also the plastic trim piece on the rear lower end of the trunk (boot) is loose, the light comes on. It is held by 4 plastic pins. When in place properly, no light, when loose, trunk open light is on, even when trunk is secured.
