I don't think my 95 Grand Cherokee is shifting into overdrive all the time. Can you tell me what the RPMs should be for it running 65 MPH?

Depending on differential gearing, most run at about 21 hundred rpms @65. Overdrive usually shifts in at around 45mph. To see if it is engaged, while doing about 50, lightly tap the brake. That should momentarily disengage the od and the rpm's should increase for a moment. @45, you should notice the rpm drop when it engages initially.

Why is my deville running 2900 rpms when running at a speed of 70 mph?

run the fault codes to check for OD operation and TCM problems . IT could be a VSS sensor as well but this should show up in the codes.

I agree. It sounds like you are not going into overdrive or lockup.

How do i tell if my overdrive is working on my lucida.i think its in top then somtimes i feel another shift

Keep an eye on you tachometer. When you are pretty sure it has shifted to the top "direct" gear, note the RPMs .Try to maintain the same MPH and then note when you think has shifed again. If the RPMs drop again, you then know it has gone into OD. Hope this helps you understand.
Thanks, Robert

2001 montana won,t runs about 2800rpms @70 don,t seen to be going into overdrive on adown hill slope when in overdrive with the shifter it drops the rpms down to 700rpms , and when you put the shifter into...

I think I understand the question. These transmissions are known for the 4th speed shaft shearing off the splines. 4th being overdrive. This won't let it shift into overdrive and also no engine breaking when you are coasting. In other words, when you are coasting your engine rpms will drop down to idle speed. So when in 3rd or drive manual, you do have engine breaking and the rpms fall slowly. The transmission is gonna have to come out to be repaired. I hope this helps.

Odd shifting 99 jeep grand cherokee

A common problem with most overdrive units.Overdrive should only be used above 40 mph. With the mileage odds are that you need to have transmission looked at professionally. It maybe time to consider rebuilding it.I do not see a trans service of being a benefit.

Hi, Why on the newer 06-08 grand cherokee limited with the Hemi, Quadra Drive II, does it take until about 65 MPH for it to go into overdrive or 5th gear?

how high does it rev before it goes into 5th gear? if it's not too high, could just be a long gear, and completely normal, or otherwise you may have a bur on your shift valve causing it to not want to shift normally. for that case you have to pull the trans and grind the bur off, or if it's under warranty fight with the dealership until they agree to.
