I own an 03 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 liter ZR1. My engine light keeps coming on and when I hook up my trouble code reader it display's a PO496 which is descibed as being a excessive (intake manifold) vacuum present. I had this issue before so I went ahead and replaced the intake manifold gaskets as a set. Any ideas as to why this problem persists? Does this mean that there is a leak or could somthing be clogged causing the higher vacuum? I do have a degree in diesel mechanics but it's been 20 years since I wrenched on a vehicle of any kind. Please let me know if anybody out there has a quick fix or somthing I could check.

Your best bet have the instrument cluster tested . Hooking it up to a factory scanner is the best first diagnostic step . Checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . Checking cluster data , all gauge info. come's from the BCM or PCM over the class 2 serial data network . Class2 data is a communication network for the control modules . Are their any light's lit on the instrument cluster ? Check engine , ABS , Air bag etc..... GM also had instrument cluster problems from 2003 to 2006 , stepper motor's that drive the gauge needls , silver migration -google that one. Try checking the abs madule, that could be causing all the problems, such as the trans code and engine code. Also check the grounds cable maybe rusty or lose. I had a Chevy Tahoe and it was almost the same problems and it turn out to be the abs madule. Hope this helps good luck.
code p 0496 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system---high purge flow===causes ---wiring --EVAP valve---mechanical fault
code p 0171system too lean bank 1===causes --intake / exhaust leak---AIr system---MAF/VAF sensor--fuel pressure too low/---pump--injectors ---Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
with the first code it could be a faulty vent valve or solenoid
with the second code , it is probably a faulty HO2S unit ( the one in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter)
It has to be done with a code reader,the codes have to be erased,but it will come back on if the problem is still there,auto zone can do this for you for free.
the light can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, but the light is telling you there is a problem in the electronic controls of the engine, until that problem is fixed the light will continue to come on. Here is how u test the system for the trouble codes that are stored whenever the check engine light comes on. Go to the link for instructions on how to retrieve codes.
If i is running fine then it wouldn't be anything inportant.I have a 91 chev and the engine light is alway's on but runs good.Put a code reader on it to erase the code and it won't come on again.
