I'd start in general vicinity where GF re-arranged wires. Look closely around steering column, symptom suggests ignition switch/wiring. She gets an E for Effort..

that is what I thought but when I checked it out it all seems fine but ubfortunatly I never new what it looked like before so I'm kinda at a loss

You'll have to play "detective" look for contacts/connections that look unusually clean like they were newly disconnected. Get under dash with flashlight and check for loose wires (girls NEVER get them tight)

1987 ford f150 shut off and will not turn over to start

If it cranks but won't start, you will need to figure out if you are dealing with a spark or fuel problem to proceed.
Check those things and let me know what you find.

Running fine. Died and wont start. Cranks fine

can you hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key on but without crancking the engine? Generally the fuel pump will prime for about two to three seconds when you first turn the key on. if you don't hear it that's probably the culprit. If you do hear it it may be a bad pump. also should check to see if you have spark. You can do this by removing a plug wire and using another spark plug. Ground the plug to somthing metal and have someone crank the engine (making sure you are not touching the plug or metal) You should see a spark while cranking. Good luck

Sounds like there's a grounded wire somewhere between the ignition switch and the solenoid. When you bypass the switch with the screwdriver you don't ground out the line, but with the switch the ground shorts the circuit, blows the fuse, and then won't start the engine.

1987 f150 turns off

Ignition switch is no good. Staying on at night, not switching power on and off to your engine. I don't mean the key and tumbler, i mean the switch down at the bottom of your steering column.

Truck having trouble starting.

With the engine running remove the positive battery cable, if the engine continues to run the alternator is good and the battery is probably bad. If the engine dies then the opposite is true.
