If the belt broke, and you put a new belt on with everything in the same position, most likely the belt is not correctly installed. The
cam position and crankshaft must be in a exact position, with
marks on both to match a similar mark on the non moving part of the engine. If your engine is an "interference" engine you are
in big trouble with a broken timing belt because valves are bent
not closing and other problems. I hope this is not the case.
Goggle your make year model and timing marks You should be able to find pictures that will show the marks that must line up.
I had a belt off by just one cog and had your problem. Double
check to be sure you have the right timing belt from your supplier. There is a chance someone mixed things up. Do you have spark?
According to the book, you are supposed to mark the rotor on the distributor before removal and then put it back in place. If the crank has been moved, you align the mark on the crank damper with zero on the timing cover when the number one cylinder is at TDC. Then put the distributor in so that the rotor is pointing to the number one plug wire. It does not say anything about using a timing light.
You may want to check out a repair book in an auto parts store to get the details.
Sonds like your valve timeing,it may have slip a tooth ,remove #1 plug bring top dead center check timing marks and see if they line up.I hope this helps you
Timing mark is located at the cranshaft cover and it needs to be alligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley.
What would not make it start is the wrong timing. The correct timing is an association from alligned Timing mark with the piston # 1 at the top together with its intake valve + exhaust valve closed. Hope this helps.
If you want it timed right you really need a tach and time tool. Generaly you can just line up the 12 o clock mark on the epump with the scribed mark on the front cover. This is a starting point and not the exact time you have to have it at. Then just keep the bolts a little lose with the engine running and turn the pump clockwise (if seen as sitting on the engine block looking forward at the fan). Adjust the pump and listen to the change, this should advance the timing if I remember correctly. If not just go counterclockwise. You can get them in time by ear 95% of the time.
