can you hear the pump run?? if you can i would start by changing the fuel filter before i droped the tank... also did you check your relay for the fuel pump, under the hood?? the sending unit doesnt send the fuel to the engine, the sending unit is what operates your gauge... so, if your pump is junk and got to drop the tank, the sending unit is built in the pump, so kill 2 birds with one stone, and replace the fuel pump assembly, and everything will work.

Your symptoms sound like a fuel pump, not the filter. The gas gauge is controlled by a sending unit that is mounted on the pump in the tank. If the gauge is sometimes not working, chances are, neither is the pump, which would cause the car not to start. The pump not only provides fuel, but also pressurizes the fuel system for the injectors and throttle body. The fuel filter would cause poor mileage and hesitation when accelerating. A completely blocked filter would cause the car not to run, but your gas gauge would still work since it's reading the level of fuel in the tank, not whether it's coming through the line to the engine.

the fuel pump doesnt set off the check light recheck the connections at the fuel pump check for power to the connector also check the pump new doesnt mean not defective

I think the fuel filter is inside the tank, and when they get clogged it is time to replace the fule pump. thy not to drive the vehicle around so close to empty.

It could be several things. The chepaest and easiest is the fuel filter. This is located inside the frame rail on the same side as your gas tank. Replace that, takes about 10 minutes. Unless you have hardlines you will need clamps to pinch the lines so gas doesnt run everywhere. If the fuel filter doesnt fix it could be your fuel pump.

Replace fuel pump and save yourself some grief. Most fuel problems in high mile car go out, but give you hell before it goes out completely

sounds like fuel pump pressure. I had the same thing happen to me in a Lincoln mark VII and the electrical connection was shorting out in the fuel pump. I changed the fuel pump..Returned under warranty) put the new one on with filter and had no problem with it.
