Our 1998 gm safari said check gauge and the engine won't start,We thought it was the gas so I went to the gas station and got gas. I was wondering what does that mean?

More information required. Was it running then the light came on and it shut down or did the light come on after it shut down. Also it turns over but will not start? Might be the fuel pump of fuel pump relay. The check engine light does come on while trying to start the vehicle and goes out once started so it may be of no issue.

Check gauges means that the car senses something is not working properly, such as temp gauge reading to hot ,or oil pressure reading to low ,fuel to low, its to get your attention that something is wrong .

Replace the insturment cluster or fix it ! From 03 to 06 GM insturment clusters had bad stepper motors , this motors control the gauges .

My fuel gauge has spun all the way around and is stuck underneath the pin
This is not a solution..I just want to see if you had these symptoms..Mine did the same thing tonight(9-22-10, '98 Olds Cutlass) I went to the gas station..got back in the car to start it, and it sounded like the battery was dead (clicking when turning the ignition) and then all my gauges started moving around very quickly. The gas gauge went all the way around and is also stuck under then pin. I tried to jump it, but no luck. Did this happen to you and did you figure out how to fix it? Thanks.

Seems like it's not getting enough gas
It could be your fuel pump with your car not running right, the gas gauge thing i have no clue maybe the sensor inside the tank is messed up. or it could just be your fuel filter not doing its job. Htere are a few things it could be I would say Fuel Filter, Pump and maybe a vacume (spelling) problem, I would need to be there and hear it running or drive it to really figure out what it is
