Well I took it to a trusted mechanic and unfortunately for me it was not the switch in the trunk. The switch for the accent trunk light is built into the trunk latch which would be easy to fix, but I knew that because of the light going off when you press the brake it had to be a short somewhere, which it did turn out to be. Too bad we couldn't actually find the short, it is probably something rubbing on a gound somewhere. I actually just took the bulb out of the dash behind the trunk open indicator so it wouldn't drain my battery.
The light works with a pin switch that is pressed when the trunk is closed, find the switch in the trunk and remove it to see if the earth wire is connected.
if it is just pull it off and clean the connection. This should be a quick fix.You can also clean the rear light connections and make sure there are no bare wires.Hope this helps.
If it turns on and off when you hit bumps and turns off if you pull up on the trunk, then your battery might be weak, ie less than 10V, the alternator might also not be charging the battery properly....

I have the exact same problem, the trunk open light is always on until I apply the break. From what I have found this apears to be a somewhat common problem, but I haven't found any solutions. It is obviously a short of some kind but I can't find out where it is.
Where is the automatic press button to open a trunk of 2004 Hyundai Accent?
