Hi there,

When you say you 'lose instrument panel', does that mean instrument panel lighting or the gauges go dead?

When you flip off the headlights, does the instrument panel come back? If it does, forget the fuse box.

If it's the instrument lighting, I'd be looking at headlight switch itself. In Safari's, the headlight switch and panel dimmer switch reside in one assembly. Coincidence? I think not.

I recommend replacing the switch. You can find one at a salvage yard for $5.00.

When you do the replacement, inspect the plugs and wiring attached to the old one for anything suspicious (loose wires, frayed insulation, bare wire, charred wire, etc.)

Let me know how it turns out.
Good luck,

If this works out for you, please take a sec and rate my solution.

Thanks
Mike

    Hey there rushingian,

Following up here. Curious as to what the problem turned out to be.
The switch is what both systems have in common. If it was something else, I'd really like to know.

I try to keep my success percentage at the highest level possible. I don't get 'Thanks for tryings' often, I'm trying to avoid them in future. So if I gave you a less than satisfying solution, allow me the chance to rectify it. I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Mike

BTW, while it is likely a short, the symptoms don't point to a blown fuse.

Electral the dash lights are not working

check your dash light dimmer switch. it is usually by the headlight switch, it might of gotten bumped accidently. if this doesn't fix your issue then i need to know if all dash lights are out or just the ones in the instrument cluster.

1994 silverado illumination on instrument panel doesn't work, parking lights and tail lights do not work but headlights and brakelights work fine. All fuses are good. Is this a bad dimmer switch?

No. Dash lights being out could be a bad headlight switch, since the dash lights are routed through the headlight switch, not the dimmer switch. Park and tail lights also controlled by the headlight switch.

1994 GMC P/U's cruse control no longer works. Appears no power. Checked fuses in panel but no fuse by name of ''cruse'' and all fuses OK. Need diagram or schematic and/or help troubleshooting.

Does your turn signals, high headlight beam work? Also, does the AC function through the dash vents and not the defrost vents?

My cruise control quit and I found it was the vacuum lines running to the servo.

Have a problem with my dashboard lights they dont light up.

Is the headlight switch turned all the way to illuminate the dashboard lights? If it is, check the fuse for instrument panel, also marked as instrument cluster.

Lose power to half of the systems

My solution turned out to be a fusible link behind the battery. Cost me $55 for a tow and another $75 to track down the problem. I wonder if yours is a loose connection on the same line as the fusible link. Or maybe yours has a circuit breaker. My question is, why did the fusible link go in the first place, and what caused the relays to click off and on--maybe the computer got confused?

What would cause both low beam headlights to go out at the same time? i have replaced the headlights and they still dont work.

The headlight high/low beam switch assembly.96 Safari has the turn signal stem as the high/low beam switch.Removal of the steering wheel is necessary to get to the switch assembly for replacement.
