I have a 1993 Geo Prizm LSI, that cranks, but will not start, and has no spark. The problem began as a cold engine hard starting problem, but after I replaced the distributor with a rebuild, it stopped starting at all. The rotor, the cap, the plugs, and plug wires are new as well. The battery is new. I replaced the ECM with a used unit, and still no luck. Any Ideas gents?

Sounds like the replacement distributor rotor wasn't in the same position as the old rotor in the one you took out. The distributor is powered by a gear meshed to the crankshaft and the rotor has to be in the right position (#1 cylinder at TDC) to fire the #1 plug. Use a compression gauge inserted in the spark plug hole to determine when the piston is TDC.
When the piston is at BDC there will be no compression. The piston travels twice for a complete cycle once at TDC and another at BDC. Hope this helps.

Are you sure you got the dustributor in the right tooth? Check timing using procedure at link below. Or, maybe you got a bad rebuilt. Here are some tests to check it out:
1993
See Figures 6 and 7

  1. Check for spark at each spark plug with a spark tester. Check at least 2 plug wires.
  2. If spark is only detected at some plugs, check for a faulty distributor cap or rotor. Also check the spark plugs and plug wires. Replace, if necessary.
  3. Measure the resistance of the distributor connector C1 when cold, between terminals 3 and 6, using a digital voltmeter. If the camshaft position (CMP) sensor resistance is not between 185-275 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
  4. Measure the resistance of the distributor connector C1 when cold, between terminals 2 and 5, using a digital voltmeter. If the camshaft position (CMP) sensor resistance is not between 370-550 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
  5. Measure the resistance of the distributor connector C1 when hot, between terminals 3 and 6, using a digital voltmeter. If the camshaft position (CMP) sensor resistance is not between 240-325 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
  6. Measure the resistance of the distributor connector C1 when hot, between terminals 2 and 5, using a digital voltmeter. If the camshaft position (CMP) sensor resistance is not between 475-650 ohms, replace the distributor housing.
  7. Measure the air gap between the signal rotor and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. If the air gap is not 0.008-0.016 inch (0.2-0.4 mm), replace the distributor housing.

Yes a harmanic balancer from tha corolla is the same thing. I had to do the same thing with my 95 geo. It works out to be a lot cheaper buying for a toyota than a geo.

turns over and crank are the same thing,
so you are saying it does crank over but no start, right?
you need to determine if you have at least 50psi of fuel pressure in fuel rail at reed valve.

for that cost you could have taken it to a mechanic and had the compretion tested, that is what needs to be done. at least 90psi and all cyliders sould be within 15% to that.

1997 geo prizm not starting it is flooding and getting too much gas

10,000 toyota corolla (prizm) posts and not one engine size option stated. (all posters.) what a sham.
old post.
why not stated engine. and then testing for spark
spark is #2 of the classic 3
good engine (good compression)
good spark (all 4, and timed right)
good fueling. (last, if above is good, and tuned up)
in that order
does the distributor rotor spin cranking?

its not too much gas, as no spark allows NO SPARK
to flood the engine.

does car start with test fuel and run, until the fuel runs out.
do you have fuel pressure, while reading the FSM , way of doing it.
some cars only make fuel pressure, cranking and runing.
other make pressure, for 3 seconds key on, and cranking and running only, and all cars drop pump and injections when ECU sees spark die.
that is why stating which Toyota engine YOU HAVE, helps with diagnosis. and please stop hot wiring your car and learn to use a voltmeter. Ive seen $3000 ECU blown up do to bad mechanics.

Does a 1993 geo prizm 1.8L lsi have two temp sensors?

buy the manual. and RTM,
and yes, Air , water, and on a stock car up to 3 coolant sensors.
The ECT runs the ECU. tells ECU coolant temp.
my guess is the coolant gage is dead? RTM
on most 93 car, the Guage has its own sensor, (isolated)

Wondering if the notch between the two cerpentine groves is top dead center on crank and if hole cam shaft should be up or down? 1990 geo prizm

it's not customary for the timing marks to be in the groove surfaces of a pulley. remove # 1 spark-plug. Remove fuel pump fuse to not allow engine to start. Plug spark plug hole with a rag and crank engine until compression blows out the rag. Now look for the TDC mark on crank pulley and hole on cam to be on top and aligned with mark on cam bearing cap

1993 Geo Prizm 1.6L Won't start and has no spark at the spark plugs. Distributor coil seems fine. Got one from junkyard and got same reading from both through meter. Lights come on and windshield wipers...

Hello!
Can you see if the rotor in distributor is turning whilst engine is cranked? or if the Cam is turning by looking through the oil filler while someone turns the key.
If they aren't turning/revolving then you may unfortunately be suffering a timing chain/belt failure.
Sorry to bear bad tidings if this is the problem.
