Hi! You must first check your engine wiring a wire connecting to your gas tank, then try to open your interior light a loose connection might be causing the this problem. Then it will solve your problem.
It's likely the bulb is burned out. This can be a tricky fix, but doable if you're handy.
Find some instructions (like a Haynes manual) online to remove the console, find the bulbs and replace them. If they are not burnt out, you now have access to the wires to check connections and to find out which wires you have to find on the other end. This is a Haynes manual: Ford Explorer and Mazda Navajo Repair Manual covering Ford Explorer and... You can buy this online in electronic format or print, or find the print version at most auto-stores (Canadian Tire in Canada carries them). These manuals tell you exactly how to do a LOT of things in your vehicle.
Removing the console will likely involve removing panels with snap-on connections. These require some prying to pop off. I always get nervous with some of these because you never know if they're going to break, depending on how they're made. If you can access the lock tab with a flat head screwdriver then you can probably push it back enough to disengage it without breaking it. Follow the directions you dig up, and you should be good.
