How long since a tune-up? Have you checked the timing? How many miles on engine? How is your cylinder compression?
There isn't much load on engine in park or neutral. When you put it in gear, there is a load on the engine. With carbed engine 6--8 psi fuel pressure. Crub idle in drive, 575 rpms. With a high mileage engine, that idle speed may not work. Is there an idle screw on the carb, where you can up the idle to keep it from stalling, in gear? Of course if you do that, when you put it in park or neutral the idle is going to go high, I know it's a pain. If your engine is in poor shape, your probably going to have a tough time, getting it to run correctly. Just my opinion.
A comparatively quiet engine is often a worn out engine.( Much of the knocking sound in an engine is caused by compression and expansion of gasses, which in a worn out engine is reduced due to leakage of gasses beyond the piston rings or valves.)
You will first have to have the engine pressure tested on each cylinder to ascertain the overall condition. Usually there are one of two reasons for a low oil pressure warning light or gauge reading.
No.1: The engine is badly worn and oil pressure can leak beyond the piston rings and into the cylinder.
No.2: The oil pump is close to failing or has already failed.
There is also the slight possibility that both of these faults have occurred at the same time.
The light appears because the oil pressure generated by the pump is below the limit. If the light appears only at idle and the level of the oil in the carter is good then the oil pump is worn out and it's starting to show it. You must replace the pump.
For that the engine will have to be taken off the car and that is a job for a service shop - take your car to one.
It's a possibility that your oil pressure sensor could be bad. You can replace it and see if it works again but It sounds to me like your oil pump failed which starved your bearings of lubrication and caused them to fail. Odds are that you'll need an engine rebuild or to install a used engine. I'm sorry and I hope this helps.
the pressure will vary, You'll be approx 20 psi at an idle and 45 psi @ 2500 rpm's. If the car has a lot of miles, you can expect slightly different readings. As long as your reading, I would not worry about it. Also when the engine is cold, you'll always have a higher reading until the temp rises to normal.
If the engine is not making any noise.It is probably the oil sending unit that is defective.If you want to be sure you will have to install a pressure gauge and check the pressure when the vehicle is at normal operating temperature.If it is above 10 psi then replace the sending unit.It is located on the back of the motor on the block by the left cylinder head.You might need a special socket for it.Hope this helps.Good luck.
