SOURCE: my gear shifter is in

It's a linkage adjustment on the bottom of the vehicle, or the pointer has broken loose from the steering column collar under the steering wheel.

You can sometimes crawl underneath the vehicle to figure out what needs to be adjusted if the problem is down there.

SOURCE: Van won't lock into reverse or park all the time.

it is either the shifter or the cable, I would go with a broken part in the shifter linkage. Detrim the steering column and see what shows up, very easy just 4 screw I think.

SOURCE: Shifter on column is loose, will not stay in park

Sounds like your shifter bushings are worn out. Depending on the year of your van it can be a fairly easy fix.

SOURCE: the gear shifter handle moves but the van stays in park

there is a cable attached to your transmission that is actuated with that lever. the cable has come disconected or has broken. open your hood and look for cable on top of your transmission to see if it is worn.broken ect. helps to have somebody move lever while u locate it if you are not sure what you are looking for.

I am working on a 2004grizzly 660 ATV Yamaha. The reverse light comes on while in drive slashes

I believe the reverse shift handle hits a switch and a wire comes from that switch ( one is broken or off) and it goes to the trans, typical.. I usually replace the wire and find a place to secure it better

Izuzu rodeo drives forward on reverse gear

redux. (A/T trans answer not STICK SHIFTED manuals)
no years stated
no transmission stated, auto or stick.

stuck in Reverse.
linkage checks are first.

the trans has lever on the side
called the Manual valve.
it that lever does not go to DRIVE,
then there will be no drive.
there is a cable from the Shift selector to that
transmission side lever.

inspect these parts for proper movement
no damage, not slipping cable, etc.
only you can do that.
or your mechanic.

Truck will not move forward when put in any gear, drive, first,or second. But it will move in reverse. This just stated yesterday out of nowere. What do you think could be the problem???

I assume it is an automatic..In a case like that it is TRANS Failure..Did you check the fluid level or is it leaking anywhere. ?..You can try replacing the fluid and filter ...or even a shift solenoid..You didn't state how many miles you have on the truck,If it has been serviced before, and is it a 4-wheel drive.,What year model is it ,.?..Is it flashing any fault codes..? This would help me answer your question..However 9 times out of ten it is Trans Failure...Reverse is at the back of the trans and it is the largest gear...Although sometimes reverse goes out instead of forward gears...

How do you adjust the shift cable on a 1995 gmc jimmy, wont go into reverse or park.

On the 1995 Jimmy, the shift cable can come loose on the mount on the side of the transmission where the cable meets the trans. When it slips, the alignment goes off and causes the driver to not be able to put the trans into park. If you take a long stick you can push the shift arm on the trans to the park position and your trans will go into park.....what you (and I) really need to know is how to take the shift cable mount apart and reset it.

Eclipse goes into reverse but wont go in drive.

Friend, start the engine and let it run a few minutes to warm the trans fluid, set the park brake or block the front of the wheels, put the car in drive position and check the transmission fluid. Sounds like it's just too low for the pump to pick up enough for a forward engagement. Reverse doesn't take much to activate the servo. Most automatics are this way. I'm sure you'll find the fluid is way low and needs the proper fluid added. This may mean you have a slight trans fluid leak.

When i put my truck into reverse my lights dont work however if i pull my shifter back inbetween reverse and neutral if i get this one spot they come on

There is usually a switch mounted on the transmission. Perhaps it has gotten loose or something is worn or broken. Your gear selection goes park, reverse, neutral and drive. Since the switch is not coming on from park to reverse but it kinda does if you go past reverse (neutral) then it sounds like the switch has moved from its original place. That's why I think it is loose. Good Luck!

Trans in park computor read out on dash reads it is in drive

You most likley have a bent/damaged shifter cable. Unhook it at the trans, and move the linkage, with the park brake set. Push it all the way forward, that is park. The display should change and it should start. If so you will need the cable. Good Luck

99 saturn sl2 has lost reverse

Reverse & 2nd gear share the same clutch pack.Usually when reverse goes out you will get wierd shifting into 2nd or 3rd.Most likey the Input shaft retaining nut has come loose inside the first clutch housing. It can be accessed from the trans end cover but it will take some disassembly. The trans doesn't have to come out to correct this problem.I repaired many saturns with this problem. The only parts you will have to buy is an end cover gasket(paper gasket) & 41/2 qts Trans fluid.Decent mechanice could do this in about 2-3 hrs or less. The service engine light is probally on due to trouble codes from the trans controller most likey DTC P0723 No 2nd gear.hope this helps

Drive 4 light flashing when i put the key in.

This light is flashing to indicate a fault has occurred in the transmission, have a test run on the control module of the trans to figure out what that might be, it could be a simple fix once you have the trouble code.
