As you have to support/tilt the engine somewhat to remove the gearbox/diff.i personally find it easier to remove the whole unit.then support it on a stand and do any work needed before refitting(when its out you can do the timing belt.water pump,or anything else you want.without leaning over fenders or stretching to get to things BUT no doubt someone will disagree.

NOT at all you leave the engine in the car you use a engine support cradle to hold the engine upright so when you disconnect the engine mounts from underneath the engine stays supported. find out what supports the engine underneath , and will the gearbox fit when lower control arm ball joint removed.

How difficult is it to replace the engine in the 1.6 2001 Hyundai Accent

All you need is a Repair Manual ( probably Haynes) for your car, a tool box for opening and closing all those nuts and bolts and off course a engine lifting harness. It is be difficult for an amateur but not impossible.

2001 Hyundai Accent - Automatic Trasmission fluid

It is a proprietary Hyundai transmission fluid. Don't use anything other than the Hyundai stuff. This fluid has superb lubrication properties, but it breaks down much quicker than the specified 30,000 mile fluid change intervals. I highly recommend having both the fluid and filter changed once a year or once every 15,000 to 20,000 miles.

Change of Manual transmission to Automatic transmission

This would be a major engineering job, it would be time consuming and very costly if new original parts were to be used and i suspect it would invalidate your warranty.

Would it not be better to trade in your car for an automatic version?
