Replace drive belt on 2004 Ford Taurus

ok with a smooth pulley use smooth side of belt with serrated pulley use serrated side of belt. The belt will seem too short at first but with some real muscle it can be pulled into place.
I never leave the tentioner for last because it is usually hard to get at.
leave the most convenient pulley for last the job goes smoother.
put the belt on the crankshaft first.
then go around in either direction. remember the smooth serrated rule and rout the belt. most likely the alternator will have a smooth pulley just before or after it.
good luck!!!

How to chg alternator on 2002 ford taurus 24v dohc 3.0

ctionsThings You'll Need
  • Flywheel holding tool
  • New alternator
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
    • 1Determine which alternator your Ford Taurus will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Taurus's engine. Models made from 1986 to 1991 have a 2.5 L HSC, 3.0 L Vulcan or 3.8 L engine. The 2.5 L engine was dropped for 1992 to 1995 models, and post-1995 models will have a 3.0 L engine.
    • 2Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Release the tension on the accessory drive belt so that you can remove the drive belt from the pulley.
    • 3Take off the mounting bolt on the right side of the alternator with a socket wrench and remove the bracket for the power steering hose. Remove the mounting bolts on top of the alternator, the front passenger wheel and tire assembly and the front fender splash shield. Remove the alternator splash shield with a socket wrench and take off the inspection cover for the torque converter.
    • 4Mount a tool to hold the flywheel so you can remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. Lower the alternator so you can unplug its electrical connections. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and Oxygen sensor connector. Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt and B+ connector nut to remove the alternator.
    • 5Install the new alternator assembly by reversing the above procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the B+ connector nut to 71 in. lbs. and the lower alternator bolt to 18 foot pounds. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 74. foot pounds, the upper alternator bolts to 18 foot pounds and the nut for the power steering hose bracket to 13 foot pounds.

Remove and replace alternator

Hello,

Just follow these steps to remove and replace the alternator. You will need this tools, Serpentine belt tool, Battery wrench, Lug wrench, Floor jack, Jack stand, Socket set,

  1. Open the hood, locate the serpentine belt tensioner and move the tensioner off the
serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Slip the belt off the tensioner
pulley with your other hand and then slowly move the tensioner back to its normal
position. You can pinpoint the location of the belt tensioner by following the belt
routing diagram, printed on the fan shroud.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with the battery wrench.
Push the cable end away from the battery so it doesn't make contact during the
    repair.
  3. Turn the lug nuts on the right-front wheel counterclockwise until they're loose
enough for hand removal, but leave them on for now.
  4. Lift the right-front end with the floor jack and support it on a jack stand placed
underneath the right-front frame. Remove the lug nuts and right-front wheel by hand
    and set them aside.
  5. Slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley by hand. You can access the
alternator through the wheel well. Unplug the wiring harness from the alternator
by hand and remove the ground strap with your socket set.
  6. Remove the alternator mounting bolts with your socket set. Lift the alternator out
of the engine well, through the wheel well. Insert the new alternator in reverse of
how you removed the old one.
  7. Thread the alternator mounting bolt through the new alternator and into the
alternator bracket by hand. Tighten the bolts with your socket set.
  8. Attach the alternator ground strap with your socket set. Plug the alternator
    wiring harness in by hand.
  9. Slip the serpentine belt over the new alternator pulley. Reinstall the wheel and
lug nuts by hand. Lower the Taurus of the jack stand with the floor jack.
  10. Move the belt tensioner aside again and place the belt on the tensioner pulley with
your free hand. Hold the belt on the pulley and slowly move the tensioner back to
its normal position. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
Hope this helps you.
Take care and good luck

Where is the tension pully on a 1993 ford taurus 3.0 motor

there is no spring tensioner on some of the 3.0 engines. See instructions below. I will paste a pic on the version that DOES have a tensioner at the bottom of this post.

3.0L Engine-Except SHO
ALTERNATOR BELT WITHOUT AUTOMATIC TENSIONER

  1. Loosen the adjusting arm and pivot bolts.
  2. Turn the alternator belt adjusting screw counterclockwise until the old belt can be removed.
  3. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the pulleys. Check that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the belt tension, then tighten the adjusting arm and pivot bolts.

3.0L SHO Engine
ALTERNATOR BELT
See Figure 2
  1. Loosen the nut in the center of the idler pulley.
  2. Loosen the idler adjusting screw until the old belt can be removed, then remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the pulleys in proper contact with the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the new belt to specifications as follows: Turn the idler pulley nut to the right to tighten the belt to a specification of 220-265 lbs. (980-1180 N). Torque the idler pulley nut to 25-37 ft. lbs. (34-50 Nm).

POWER STEERING AND AIR CONDITIONING BELT
See Figure 2
  1. Remove the alternator belt.
  2. Loosen the nut on the tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the belt adjusting screw on the tensioner counterclockwise until the belt can be removed, then remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Position the new belt over the proper pulleys, making sure the V-grooves are properly seated.
  2. Install the alternator belt.
  3. Adjust the power steering and air conditioning belt to a specification of 154-198 lbs. (690-980 N) with a belt tension gauge.
  4. Adjust the alternator belt.
3.0L Engine (Except SHO) and 3.8L Engine
VEHICLES THROUGH 1993 WITH AUTOMATIC TENSIONER

See Figures 4 and 5
  1. Insert a 1 / 2 in. breaker bar into the square hole in the tensioner.

On the 3.8L engine, the tensioner has a1/2in. square hole cast into the rear of the tension arm directly behind the pulley. On the 3.0L engine, the1/2in. square hole is cast into the spring housing on the front of the tensioner.
  1. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the belt.

e31142e.gif

Fig. Fig. 5: 3.8L belt schematic-1993 shown

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt over all the pulleys, except for the alternator pulley on the 3.0L engine for vehicles through 1992, or the idler pulley for 1993 3.0L vehicles.
  2. Rotate tensioner counterclockwise and install the belt over the alternator pulley. Make sure that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.
  3. On the 3.0L engine, install the alternator belt for vehicles through 1992.
  4. For 1993 3.0L vehicles, install the drive belt over the idler pulley.

How to remove the belts of an 88 ford taurus?

You need to use an extension bar on the end of your spanner to move the tensioner. It is spring loaded and applies tension auromatically to the belt. When you have your socket on the center nut and the extension bar in place gently apply force and you will see the tensioner move and the belt loosens. Be carefull nothing slips. When you replace the belt thread the lower pulleys first and leave the threading over the most accessible pulley till last as this one will be the hardest. Be carefull not to release the tension when the belt is not properly on the pulleys as it strains the belt. Try to enlist the help of an assistant who can relieve the tension while you thread the belt.

Need to know how to put the serpentine belt back on a 2000 taurus

Did you take it off? Did it fall off? There might be a picture of this routing on the car under the hood. Find the tensioner and yank on it while putting the belt on.
