Hi,all the alternators job is,is to charge the battery,so the alternator has nothing to do with it not starting.now if your battery keeps draining down and you have to recharge it every couple of days, then it would be the alternator that was bad.but if you have a fully charged battery and it still wont start, its another problem! does it turn over and try to start but not start?? or when you turn the key over does it just go click-click-click?? or does it just not make any noise at all when you turn the key over?? it makes a big diffrence which of the three its doing, let me know which one its doing, also you can take your battery to auto-zone and they will load test to see if its holding a charge ok.....just let me know.......yz-maniac.
Testimonial: "yz-maniac obviously knows his stuff but beyond that, he also obviously cares about people in crisis. Too bed I don't have a guy like this in my area."
It does not try to turn over, nor does it click, click, click. It merely makes one hollow metallic sounding click that I can hear at both the starter module in the engine fuse box and at the starter. Prior to the Trooper quitting completely, the day before it sounded as if it were dragging when it started like the battery was low. I have had the battery tested and it is in perfect operating condition under a load. I also transferred my truck battery to the Isuzu but it would still not turn over. You haven't any idea how grateful I am for your response. When I mentioned the Isuzu dragging the day before the breakdown, it took place at KU med center where my wife is undergoing treatment for a life-threatening illness. I am not in a position to afford the 400-500 dollar quotes I've received from mechanics in our area to repair the vehicle and must take this task on myself. I am not by any means a mechanic but I'm not exactly a dummy when it comes to making do. I suspect the starter has locked-up but after crawling under this thing I can see it will be an immense task to remove and replace this thing under "shade tree" conditions. However, my ole' 96 Ford truck is not up to making the repeated trips to KC necessary to see to my spouse's well-being and I must get this Trooper fixed. It's bad enough that a new starter is $147 when every nickel counts right now. So, thank you so much for your helpful and kind response in this trying time of woe. May you be blessed. Earnestly, Rocky Griffith
hello again lisagriffith,I'm sorry to hear about your wife's illness( i will pray that all goes well and she will have a quick recovery) yes it sounds like it is the starter itself , you might try one last thing that i have done in years past to buy a little more time, which may or may not work? take a wrench or hammer and tap on the starter housing and see if that frees it up( worth a shot,) i had a car that i did that on and it lasted another year before the starter died completely, I guess the trany is an automatic?( if it was a standard trany, you could park on an incline and just bump start with key on and putting in second gear and popping the clutch...) and i wish i was near you as well because under your circumstances i would help install your starter free of charge.may god bless you, and bless and heal your wife. sincerely,Danny.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
If the battery light is on, I strongly suggest that you have
the battery charged. It can be an indication of a weak battery or a faulty
alternator. If the battery light still on after charging then the problem will
surely be on the alternator itself. If that's the case the alternator should be
replaced to resolve the problem.
If the battery won't hold charge even on a new alternator
then the problem will be on the battery itself. It surely is in the end of it's
service life and replacement will be necessary.
You may try to reset it to by removing the positive battery
connector, letting it sit for at least 5mins. then reconnect it again. This
will reset the system and can get the battery light off.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
