In all newer cars there is a safety feature that will not let the vehicle come out of park unless the brake is depressed. There is a wire that pulls the safety release on the gear shift so you can put the van in gear. You might need to have that checked. This is not an uncommon problem, but the safety features like this have prevented young children from knocking vehicles out of gear. Go to your local garage and see if you can get this fixed. If you have kids I stress that you not go at this alone, let the professionals help. Good luck.

How do you replace an ignition switch on a 2002 chevy venture van? I have a 2002 chevy venture van and have had a problem with the starter staying engaged. I replaced the started and it fixed it...

So what it only does it in park or neutral ! The vehicle starting circuit is only suppose to let it start in park or neutal . Park neutral safety switch won't allow B+ voltage to S terminal on the starter solenoid unless the vehicle is in park or neutral . It's probably the starter relay contacts stuck closed . You really should learn how it works before guessing as to the problem . Plus learn automotive electrical testing ! The ignition switch when turned to the start position send's a voltage signal to the PCM - engine computer .The PCM will energize the starter relay to crank the engine . PCM / ABS 10amp fuse in the I/P fuse box supply's B+ voltage to the park / neutral safety switch . When in park or neutral the B+ voltage goes through the control side of the relay to the PCM which will supply a ground to energize the starter relay .

My van is stuck in park, and won't start or the

have had a car stuck in park before, and some of same symptoms. on some vehicles there is an access hole with a cap that you have to pop off by the shifter column. You can over ride the lock on the column through this. Maybe it will help.

Sterring column feels like its stripped

The neutral sensor went out thats why it wouldn't turn on and I accidently broke the sterring coulumn so I went to the junkyard and found the same van and took off that sterring column. Now its on my van and its running better

first have somebody check if the brake lights at the rear of the van are working when you apply the brake pedal if they dont its a fuse for the brake lights if they do work its more than likely a shift lock solenoid
