My 1998 Toyota Camry also has an erratic speedometer which jumps down to a lower or zero mph which after a couple of seconds causes the transmission to downshift and the engine to rev. Diagnostics have not detected a sensor problem. A transmission specialist couldn't find the problem. A shop which specializes in electrical couldn't find the problem. Help!

Check all the wiring from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) to the ECM, including all connectors. It seems that there may be an intermittent open (or short) causing the ECM to sense the vehicle slowing down/stopping.

1998 Camry Speedometer is not accurate

The most common cause of this is incorrect size of the tires or wheels. Check you owners manual or look at the sticker inside the frame of the drivers door to determine the tire size recommended by toyota. Being a used vehicle, it's entirely possible the former owner put the wrong size on the car. If not, the transmission may have the incorrect worm gear, or it could be a bad sensor.
