Temp gauge is not working, so Auto transmission won't shift to Overdrive (4th). Replaced a temp sending unit, but didn't fix it. There are other sending units next to the one I replaced, does one of those need to be replaced? Is there a way to bypass the Temp gauge to allow the transmission to shift to overdrive? Thank you.

You would need to study the wiring diagram to answer your final question.

The temp sensor of a basic pre-computerised temp gauge mostly just has a single wire and when a gauge doesn't work it can be tested by grounding that wire which then should result in a full scale reading from the gauge. If it doesn't the supply, gauge or wiring is at fault.
If there is a full scale indication the sensor could be faulty or perhaps the engine is too cool.

When electronic engine management came along the temp gauge was increasingly driven by the computer from the main sensor and the single wire type was deleted.

SOURCE: automatic transmission not shifting into 3rd or 4th

call a dealer and they will tell you you are suppose to change your transmission fluid every 2 years or 30,000miles but if you was carrying this much load you may have over heated the transmission so I would shop around and get a good deal at a transmission place where they can replace the filter and the fluid and adjust the bands on the transmission if needed

SOURCE: how to use the overdrive on the auto.transmission.

the overdrive button on your automatic transmission is for cruising on the highway basically like having another gear for better economy careful not to use it when your not on the highway because lugging the car in overdrive when its not needed will cause higher fuel consumption other than that you should have no problems just get out on the highway and push and away you go

SOURCE: 2000 es300 lexus auto w overdrive button overdrive 4th gear not work

There isn't anything wrong with your car. This is perfectly normal. I have a 2000 ES300 as well as other people that I know and it operates in the same way. Overdrive doesn't mean the same thing for every car or transmission. In our case overdrive is simply a reference to the top gear which is 4th gear. When you switch overdrive off(which is depressing the button causing the O/D OFF dash light to illuminate,) the highest gear becomes 3rd because you turned 4th gear or overdrive off. The application scenario for this is usually mountainous terrain where a lot of uphill driving makes it more feasible not to up shift into 4th gear while ascending and descending. It will not switch back to overdrive or 4th gear until you re-engage it by turning the overdrive back on or repressing the button. Again, when the O/D OFF dash light is illuminated, overdrive which is 4th gear is off and the highest gear will then become 3rd. It will never shift into 4th gear while this light is illuminated or overdrive is off. When you press the button and the O/D OFF dash light is NOT illuminated overdrive is on and therefore it will shift into 4th gear as usual. This applies to all 97-2001 ES300's and probably any other car you drive tat exhibits this same type of change when overdrive is turned off.

SOURCE: 1994 toyota paseo: overdrive problem

I would start with replacing your tranny fluid. black is no good. your tranny should hold about 7 qts of fluid. The tranny fluid runs through your radiator to help keep it cool. If your thermostat is stuck closed your eng coolant won't circulate and the coolant will get hotter inside your radiator. thus making your tranny fluid hotter and breaking it down. After time it will turn black from getting too hot. Let your car warm up to normal operating temperture then grab your upper radiator hose. It should be very warm. If not your thermostat is stuck closed.

SOURCE: car will not shift into overdrive

As a response to solution #1 these cars do have an overdrive while in D-4, mine was shifting in and out at 70 mph until it finally quit and the rpm is now 3100 at 70 mph insted of 2700. The car still shifts 4 full times just not the fifth-OD. I still can't find out what fixes this problem either.

My 1980 mgb overdrive shifts fine cold when it reaches operating temp.it won't shift up or down.

Solenoid coil warms up and dissipates too much voltage with age and needs replacing. Bottom of overdrive unit. Sometimes cleaning and adjusting can help extend their life a bit.

1990 4runner not shifting properly when cold.

hello, first you need to make sure the engine gets to operating temperature, maybe the thermostat needs to be replaced, if after that it still has the same problem the temp sender could be the issue here. It is located on a housing in between the cylinder heads near the firewall where the heater hose connects. there are two temp sensors, one for the gauge on the dash and one for the computer.
The dash sensor has a single wire, the computer temp sensor has a connector with two wires and is a green connector.

you are correct as a single blade connection is mostly the temp gauge sender as the gauge grounds out through the variable resistance in the sender unit
most coolant temp sensor units have 4 wires in a square shaped plug and are generally in the same vicinity
I am at loss as to any transmission problems coming from a coolant sensor problem as the purpose of that unit is to report the engine coolant temp so that the ECM can adjust the air/fuel mix, turn on the radiator fans
There may be an transmission temp sensor to report to the ECM when the transmission overheats and that would put on the engine light
It appears that the recurring problem has again surfaced
but check harness connections for corroded pins , water ingress, and check the transmission control module for connections and operation
you may also check the vacuum actuator and hose for leaks and correct operation as that unit will attempt to change ratios as the throttle setting alters

1999 chevy lumina doesn't shift into overdrive, why?

If it won't go into overdrive a speed sensor within the transmission may not be sending the shift signal to the transmission. Check fluid levels to make sure that's not causing the problem. Also, check that the fluid is red color and clean.

Transmission probably needs to be serviced at a reputable shop if you want this problem fixed.

2000 pontiac montana wont go into 4th gear

I would be interested in knowing if the thermostat is sticking open. Most Overdrives are prevented from engaging until the coolant temperature is over 177 degress F. Check you temp gauge...does it read Low? If so, change the t'stat, and see if that fixes your problem, or, if that does not help, get a complete transmission FLUSH, BEFORE you go out and get a rebuild. You just might save a ton of money.

Hi my mr2 1986 when its hot the transmission changes to 4th geer

I think its set up that way not to shift into the higher gears until it reaches a certain tempature. I know my chevy picup has a temp. sender unit that won't let it shift to overdrive until it reaches a certain temp.

Won't shift into overdrive

The engine temp has nothing to do with overdrive, transmission temp may, but either way if you are just coasting it should go in, or maintaining a speed of at least 44mph it should go in. How many miles on your car? It could be a sign of worse to come, usually the highest gears go first.... 3rd or 4th gear could be next.

Overdrive Problems

On top of engine as your facing it, there should be what looks like a temp. sending unit with a 2 wire plug on it, chg. that, it sends a signal to trans. when it gets warm enought to shift to overdrive. If trans shifts fine but won't go into overdrive thats most likely the problem.

Shifting problems

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.

Hope this helps
