The cold start valve may not be working as it should. The cold start valve supplies a rich mixture of fuel when the engine is cold. If it is not working you will experience hard starting. It can also be a partially clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. First thing to do is replace the fuel filter. If the symptoms persist then have a fuel pressure test run to rule out a weak fuel pump. If the pump is good then check the cold start valver wiring. Check the valve for leaking. The solenoid may be defective or the O rings need replacing.

I am working on a 1989 Olds Cutlass Supreme International with a 2.8L V-6. It sat for about a year and when I got it I tightened the negative battery cable and it fired right up. It ran for about 5 hours...

Try having the ignition module checked. The ignition module is located underneath of the coil packs. Usually Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts can test them. Another possibility is low fuel pressure. There is a schrader valve on the fuel inlet line that you can hook up a fuel pressure tester to. The pressure should be around 38 PSI.

The car wont start but trying got spark and got

This could be a lot of things, fuel pump pressure not enough(new fuel pump)or spark plugs and air filter need to be replaced(flooded plugs and air filter stopping up)timing has jumped,or maybe a blocked fuel filter?

is the car starter turning the engine over? If it is then the fuel pump should be checked out.You dont need to prime the system if the fuel pump is working,If the engine is not cranking over then remove and clean starter gear.

Car lacks power

I realise you mentioned that you have no vacuum leaks , but have you checked the intak manifold gaskets for vacuum leak?
if so check your distributor cap for any sign of cracks
also have you had or checked your timing?
check your fuel vapor canniste to ensure it is working properly
Are the spark plugs gapped properly?
also check to se if your rotor in the distributor is good or not

1989 cultlass supreme won't start after driving a short distance and engine has been turned off for 5 minutes

Try using a squirt bottle of gas to squirt into the throttlebody mouth ( you'll need to disconnect the breather hose from it) while starting. Don't use starting fluid! It has a tendency to catch fire!
If it starts for a little bit, then dies, you'll know the problem is in the fuel supply system. There are a number of fail-safes in the system. ( pressure switch, rotation sensor, G-switch...)

Not getting gas

Take a look at the Oil pressure sender. Has to have oil pressure for the pump to pump.
