The motor is a difficult part to remove. I suggest a certified mechanic to replace this part for you. The blower control module is built into this motor and I have seen some cars come in by people who had tried to replace their own as you want to, although the motor was removed and the new one was destroyed by improper technique of installation
The money spent to replace one time is enough to spend and receive a guarantee as well

Can i remove the motor from a 1997 cadillac seville from the top

It would probably be easier to remove the engine and transaxle from the bottom but I don't see why you couldn't take just the engine out from the top after removing the hood and the braces.

Was not getting warm air in the cabin so i assumed it must be the thermostat, replaced it - still no heat, thought maybe from replacing thermo i may need to get any air that might be traped in the system....

On most cars (all that I know of) the heater works by directing the hot water from the engine through a small radiator in the cabin and blowing air across it with a fan. If you hear and feel the fan blowing air then it could be that the valve that diverts the hot water to the small radiator is bad and no hot water is being circulated thus no warm air. In order to fix that you would have to locate the valve and replace it- many times they are in hard to reach places.
hope this helps

4.6 northstar 97 SLS how to drop engine to remove heads

well i am not saying that you are wrong but i am a GM mechanic, and these northstar headgaskets are what make me money. you will not be able to pull the engine through the top like you can for most cars, it will not fit! and yes you do have to pull the engine to do a headgasket because on them northstars, you cannot just pull the valve covers off, you have to lift the front side up and twist them off, and in order to do this you cannot do it with the engine in the car! you have to life the chassis off of the car! not only tht but the reason these head gaskets go bad is because there is not enough meet on the head bolt threads! so you will need to redo the threads on the block so this wont happen in the future! i hope this helps!

Overheating

I assume you are talking about a Northstar. Could be a lot of things. Start with the coolant level. Another easy step is to check the coolant pump belt. It is located at the top of the motor (driver's side front). It is under a belt guard next to the valve cover. You can see and feel the belt under the cover without removing anything. The belt is only about 1/4" wide and is driven by a pulley off the overhead cam. You can see the tension pulley as well. My problem was a broken belt and an easy fix.

Location of engine and chassis number

There is a flat spot at the front of the right side (passenger side) cylinder head will have the last 6 of the Vin and letter code at the end of it for id purposes. You will see it looking down from the top of the motor.
