A/C on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is not very cold

The A/C on my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is not very cold. yet the return hose is very cold and there is no freon leak (freon pressure is normal). I suspect the evaporator is dirty and there may be air leaks going around it. Is it possible to check/clean it without removing the dashboard?

if the pressure is normal there are no leaks. what is the pessure? if the line is very cold, it seems the a/c is working. maybe the temperature control door is stuck in the heat position.

I used a cheap pressure meter bought at AutoZone, and it said the pressure was normal (remained in the blue). I took the car to the A/C mechanic, and using his equipment, he said it was low on freon and he put some more. The A/C feels colder now, but not nearly as cold as I would expect, certainly not as cold as my other car (an Acura). The technician also suspected the blend doors, but running through all the settings, he said it seems to work.
I saw on another site that there is foam in the evaporator box that becomes brittle and loose and clogs everything. Unfortunately, any work on the evaporator box requires to remove the dash and purge the system, so that's out of the question for a home repair. The dash does not scare me, at least once I receive the service manual, but the freon is another story. The shop quoted around $800 to replace the evaporator. Since that's what I paid for the car, I am reluctant to have it done quite yet, even though it started being very hot here (Florida)

The refrigerant can be recoverd by the shop. discuss the cost with them and explain that you're going to do work yourself. and would like them to recover it, and once repairs are done, evacuate and charge the system. however, once the system is empty, i would replace the accumulator and orifice tube, or the receiver/dryer and expansion valve. which ever your car has. pag oil should also be added to the system. 2-4 oz should do. this can be done when re-charging.

do not rule out the blend door

No hot air control

Probably broken blend doors if everything else is working, but its just blowing cold air. Do a google search for "Jeep Blend Doors" or "Heater treater" for more info.

1996 jeep grand cherokee heater sometimes blows hot / cold air, is this a blend door problem? if so, can someone be kind enough to expalin how to fix the problem, thanks

well you might have a vaccum leak try looking for a loose hose in the front by the engine look at the hose diagram in your truck and make sure all the hoses are properly connected and in good condition this might solve your issue. good luck let me know how it went.

Helpp-my jeep grand cherokee (1996)blew a radiator hose. it overheated. Hose replaced, fluid replaced-no spark-so wont start. Engine turns over

you may have a blown head gasket. if you drain the cooling system and it starts (it'll be very hard to start, still) then you'll know

How to change the radiator on a grand cherokee 1996

Likely you have finished this job already but I recommend you get a manual Although not really difficult, instructions for this are too long to re-write. If your vehicle has an auto trans, don't forget to "top-off_ trans fluid after job is finished. Also I recommend that you go over hose clamps again after running as cold hoses often soften up when warm and will not retain proper sealing.

How to replace hose coming off top of waterpump on a 1996 jeep v8

there should be clamps on both ends of the hose. just take off the clamps and twist the hose off and replace it. make sure car is cooled down, coolant can be very hot. like most cars, it might be very hard to get at the clamps , so be patient. good luck

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Electrical problem

You may want to have the wiring harness inspected. A major section under the fuse box(hood on 96 GC 4.0) may become chafed by a close proximity AC gas hose connector. My mechanic said it was slowly chewing at the harness. It caused me fuel pump problems, but your intermittant problem could be similar.
